Rear hub seized, can’t get to cush drive.
« on: February 22, 2025, 07:22:04 PM »
Just removed rear wheel to strip the hub as I’m putting new rims on.
Can’t remove the rear sprocket assembly, it’s as if the cush drive is welded to the hub.

Tried with a piece of wood across the wheel and a crow bar under the sprocket, you can see it move a tiny fraction of a mm but won’t come apart. Tried heat, WD40, nothing will shift it.

Taken many hubs apart over the years, never come across this.

Any ideas? 74 550 K0.

I take it you’ve got the retainer ring removed Steve?

No, retainer ring is still fitted.
Just realised that might be the culprit. On every bike I’ve ever worked on they just pull apart.

Is the retaining ring a left handed thread?

My one was a left hand thread. It came out the opposite way to the arrow on it. I thought the arrow would be the way it came out

Yes I’m sure it’s a left hand thread.

Steve, if it's difficult I have the tool that fits in the four holes. Some try bashing at one hole, some make something to fit two holes. But using all four is best.

Hi Phil, thanks for the offer but it came off really easy in the end.
Made a bar with a couple of M6 bolts sticking out to engage in the holes, worked a treat.

I was just about to remove the retaining ring on mine this afternoon when I noticed that it is staked on all of the four parts you can see.  I generally just drill any staking I come across with a small drill just to clear it, do you think that will work on this.
Then I guess it’s off to make yet another special tool to remove the retaining ring.

Good to know about it being a left hand thread, the arrow on mine is not really distinguishable any more, it’s  just a faint line now.

As has been said the 500 is left hand thread on the rear retainer, the 400 is a normal RH thread.

Quite a few members have the special tool needed to remove the retainer, maybe give out your location and see if anyone is local to you that can help out.
