Headlight grill guards
« on: April 15, 2025, 07:45:02 PM »
I'm toying with the idea of fitting a headlamp guard grill to my CB400F2. But is it really classic looking, or off-road, Mad Max even? :-\ Has anyone else fitted this item to a 1970s Honda SOHC?
Your thoughts? ;)

says 'off road' to me.

But, as with anything like this, it's personal. Not something I would fit, but if you like it...go for it. Would be a boring world indeed if we all did things exactly alike.

As Sumpmagnet said, normally an off road thing, but getting fitted to a lot of street scrambler, flat tracker or brat style road bikes. If you like the look go for it. It might save your headlight from a flying stone from a pothole! 😖

Same here, scrambler/enduro overtones.

As others though, suit yourself as to what you want it to look like.

Maybe of interest  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233096661808 light unit replica of Cibiè type concave period light used in these. Unsure of exact dimensions, but looks to be of that type (geeky fascination of Rally lights here   :D ) but should fit shell. Originally the kit had an adapter ring to fit into essentially a non std sized 400/4 shell.

The 7 inch description in tbat link reference to the OD of the unit shell and not the internal reflector unit dimensions.

I agree with wha'ts been said, its all personal choice and its your bike so you do what you like with it. At least it isn't a lot of money and if you dont like it you havent lost much. Please don't be tempted to fit a headlight peak though, they really do look naff on a standard 400/4 but great on one that's been made to look like a cafe race bike with an alloy tank, rear sets, polished engine covers etc  8)

I've never had a broken headlight from stones in the last 40 years, but, aesthetically, if you like it, go for it.  I'm all for people putting their own stamp on their bikes.  Easy to remove if you change your mind.
