CB750K6 Horn Button

Hi,
I noticed the push in, plastic horn button (which also slides right for headlight flash), was dangling. It had cracked around its tiny attaching screw and I've lost the bottom third.

Does anyone have an old one knocking around? Happy to pay, and postage to Essex.

Alternatively, has anyone got a suggestion on how I might build the bottom back up, so it stays put. It actually looks fine from what you can see, but it could fall off any moment!

There are 2 parts to that switch, the arm the screw and nut goes into and the actual button. The arm can crack and break and the button can do the same. If you take the screw out you'll see if the arm is damaged, if it is that's a lot more complicated to fix. I fit a stainless steel screw and nut onto the arm, the OE one tends to rust and the slots for the screwdriver round off as a result, trying to get it out is how the arm and button get broken as a rule. Possible I have an arm and a button spare but not certain.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. The arm, the tiny nut and the screw are fine. Just a broken button. Split at the screw hole and part sheared off, leaving it hanging on.

One thing I've noticed, the horn doesn't work.  Never seem to use a horn, so never checked it before. The flasher still works. I've had a look inside and it's all there, with no sign of breakages or unsoldered joints. Will check the headlight tomorrow.

If you do have a button, that would be great! 👍

Need a horn Martin or it will fail the MOT. Although it may not need an MOT these days if stopped it must work and the police will check.

I'll have a look around.

Finally, my non-working horn is 'fixed', sort of. I thought it was related to the broken horn button. After opening the handlebar switch unit at least 3 times, I found the fault was a broken wire 1/4" from the bullet connector near the coil. I must have disturbed it when I replaced one of my coils 2 weeks ago!  I guess this is a warning that my wiring loom might be showing its age.  ::). At least the buttonless stalk still activates it OK.

Now it's getting power, the horn unit itself only clicks though, it definitely doesn't want to vibrate. I took it off to test it direct on a battery and again, I hear the contact click, but it won't vibrate. It has something loose inside it rattling around. I thought I'd take it apart, but it's all riveted together. Looks a bit old and sad (matching its owner!). The horn has the same terminals as my Bandit, so I'll connect it and test it all with that tomorrow. If it works fine, then I'll head back to the breakers yard nearby in Colchester, to see if they have something similar. I already checked there for a horn button. They would only sell complete switch gear units, but had nothing similar anyway.

Still looking for a horn button, if anyone has one languishing unloved somewhere? 👍

Remove the adjusting screw and fill it with wd40 then wind srew in and out a few times

OK. I'll try that. It was the rattle that suggested to me it may be beyond salvage? Like a very tiny component loose inside, small screw, nut or lump of solder.

Tried WD40. No joy. Put my 650 Bandit horn on and worked a treat. I can get hold of another locally, so that's the 'functioning' part of my horn saga horn sorted.

Have to say, it's nice I'm now down to these little niggly issues, with the bike now running lovely. Long may that continue... :D

I even find an excuse to go into the garage, to just look at it! Can't believe I've finally got one and it's turned out to be more than I hoped for. Lucky chap   :)👍

If it's the actual horn not working try taking it apart by following the method described by Ash in a couple of his previous posts.
I had a 400/4 horn that wouldn't work and was set on binning it. I tried the method described by Ash and it worked. You have to use a large jubilee clip around the body and carefully prise up the flange to release the two halves but once you've done that the hard part is done.
I can't find the thread link (I'm on a packed tube train) but it's out there, possibly in the 400/4 section.
It's worth trying, nothing to loose and everything to gain for the sake of the price of a jubilee clip.

I went for a little ride this afternoon to Colchester and bagged a Suzuki Bandit horn for £10 from a breakers' yard. Looks very similar, with identical electrical connections. Bolts onto the CB's bracket and is plenty loud enough. It had some minor rust on the front face, but is in better condition than my Honda's, and it works. I've sanded off the paint and rust, rust treated it and will spray it up tomorrow and jobs a good-un. This one will go on the Bandit, as my Bandit's horn was pristine and is already on the Honda.  :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I will keep the original horn just in case. I have a growing 'just in case' box...

I'm looking for a small lump of suitable black plastic, to see if I can shape a replacement horn button.
