CB750 charging system
« on: September 03, 2025, 12:46:00 AM »
Anyone fitted the bargain basement combined rectifier regulator units being sold on ebay  ?
£20 - £25 seems to be the going rate,
DSS want around three times as much for a similar pattern item
I wonder if they're actually any better  ?

Yes I tried them, it failed in about 5 days. I then fitted a well made unit from Electrex World and it's been right ever since. Cost a lot more obviously, but as they say buy cheap buy twice. I could have sent the failed unit back but couldn't be bothered so I just binned it. Electrex products are UK made and top quality, worth every penny if you don't want to be stranded at the side of the road.

I fitted the DSS one to my 400 9 years ago, so far so good.  As there is not as much space as on the 750,  I managed to concoct a small mounting plate and used the area where the original voltage control unit was.behind the left side cover.

I should clarify that the one I fitted that failed was a cheap Chinese eBay item not the Silvers unit.

Good point.
With ebay you might get your money back eventually,  after the seller has tried to insist that your bad motorcycle killed his good rectifier regulator.

I've just been made aware of another option.
Maybe a bit of a cowboy solution, but it could possibly work well.
Just buy a car alternator rectifier and use that in conjunction with the original electric/mechanical voltage control box.
I put Chinese bits in my Lucas alternator about five years ago.
No problems since
