Honda CB500 Four Sump
« on: October 23, 2025, 11:21:17 AM »
Hi all, got myself a Honda CB500 Four after selling my CB400 four, and while doing an oil change I noticed that the drain plug wasn't the normal bolt type but looks similar to a square ended bolt like fitted to some car rear diffs, so I bought a new bolt and washer but they are a bit slack in the threads, which look suspect on closer inspection, so I am wondering if I am to take the sump off to repair it or replace it, are the CB550 and CB500 ones the same?

Thanks Rob.

If you search "VAG sump plug repair kit" it'll bring up myriad methods, tools and plugs that my be in range to use for competent repair.

Those square "peg" type, usually have taper threads to seal and stay tight in axles and gearbox. In engineering terms, crude but effective and oftentimes used in steel cases that'll take a bit of brutality without wincing.

The VAG sumps were often aluminium and very similar to our Honda example, consequently there's routinely a significant number of them butchered by routine maintenance that give rise to so many solutions available.

Immaculate and lovely looking bike.  Interesting Speedometer and Rev counter.  Is that an American difference?

Yes it is a US spec, but I've put 400/4 handlebars on with UK spec shorter clutch and throttle cables, and a UK rear light, (smaller one), as I like the look and ride better.
