Hello chaps and chapess's,

I am a returning motorcyclist after 40 years. I grew up with bikes in the 1970's in South Africa and had many friends with the early 500's and 750's although one of my friends had to spoil it by buying a brand new Kawasaki Z900 and this stayed as a lasting memory for life. I passed my test in 1980 on a Suzuki 250cc. I immediately went out and bought a brand new Honda CB750FB reg NUF 624W from Redhill Motors in Brighton. I suddenly thought I had arrived and travelled absolutely everywhere on it, both commuting and trips to the south of France with wifey. I covered 30 odd thousand miles in a few years and never ever stopped enjoying it. I eventually had a self inflicted crash and apart from the odd ride, I gave up bikes for years.

Last November I decided to dip my toe back in the water and paid top money for a fully restored 1972 Honda CB350Four or so I thought!! Don't get me wrong, the bike is in beautiful condition but it just doesn't want to start and being naive, it only recently dawned on me that I made a purchase with my heart and not my head. When I arrived to view the bike it was warmed up but after purchase I quickly discovered that the starter clutch was knackered and the seller clearly knew this. However, it does eventually kick and I have had some good fun on it this year.

I hope I haven't bored you all with my introduction and feel sure that I will enjoy contributing and learning from so many of you on this forum.

Welcome to the forum and welcome back to biking👍.
The 350/4 is a very nice looking bike (and was also Mr Honda's favourite bike so you are in good company.
I think you are going to have to bite the bullet and take the engine out to fix the starter clutch as it is located deep inside the engine. I'm not sure if you can access the starter clutch from below if you take the sump pan off, if you can access will be tight and very awkward.
Having the complete engine on the bench will likely save you time in the long run and will be easier to dismantle.
Make sure all the parts you need are available before you begin (not forgetting you'll need a new sump gasket as well). With the similar 400/4 engine the starter clutch is assembled with the primary drive chain loosely located on the sprocket of the starter clutch before the lower crankcase half is attached to the top crankcase half. The engine clutch driveshaft is then passed through the starter clutch and located in the bearing in the crankcase, this then tensions the primary chain.
I can't remember if the starter clutch can be separated from the primary drive chain and removed from the engine without first taking off the lower crankcase half, someone will hopefully be along soon to advise further.

I too have a 350 Four but not as nice as yours.

  Are you sure it's the starter clutch - have you had the starter motor out - the easy bit?  As far as reluctance to start when cold goes - did the PO strip the carbs?  Yes, they are a bit of a bugger to remove/refit but worth doing right once.  Nearly everyone on this forum will tell you not to replace the brassware but use originals thoroughly cleaned.  I also had a DOHC 750 - an FA.

Something not mentioned yet is the battery, a slow delivery can make even a decent sprag clutch reluctant to bite.

Jump it from a good car supply to assess this aspect. If its successful, a new battery of decent quality may be in your shopping future

Here's a couple of photos I took previously when rebuilding my 400/4's.
You can see the primary chain around the starter clutch assembly prior to fitting the lower crankcase.
Once the lower crankcase has been fitted the clutch drive shaft is then installed (you can see the shaft and the bearings and circlips in the plastic bag on the left of the engine).
This would make me think that you could possibly remove the sump and the side engine covers (and the oil pump, the clutch and gear change mechanism) to get to the shaft. You need a pair of strong circlip pliars to remove the three circlips to get access to the bearing. Once the shaft is removed it may be possible to get access to the starter clutch and drop it out through the lower crankcase (see photo). 
It is a big job though and will be very difficult if you don't have a lifting table and you may be better of taking the engine out of the frame.

Hi Otis welcome to the forum, there is a great deal of knowledge and experience on tap here and plenty of advice and assistance.

I saw the comment on battery condition, I had an irritating hot start problem with my Triumph 1050 sport where it wouldn’t start once warmed up so very embarrassing stopping for fuel and having to wait 20 minutes for the bike to cool down before it would restart.
The fix was a new battery with a little more starting current output,  I went for the Motobatt battery in the yellow housing .
A little more expensive but a better amp output than a standard battery which cured my hot start problem, this is not your issue but I do recommend this battery and also bought one for my Honda cb400 four.
