Infra Red image of 400-4 header pipes
« on: March 20, 2026, 08:37:53 PM »
I went to my mate Paul's today (who rebuilds and sells 400/4 carbs)

I took this IR image of his 400 header pipes after starting Paul's bike and then ticking over for a few minute using my FLIR/ iPad combination. I bought this setup to look for hot-spots on some electronics I am designing for work ... but useful for bikes too.

 Cool!

But I'm too cheap/mean so I just put my hand on the pipes and if they all feel about the same, I'm good!!!

Reminds me of the rotary Norton exhaust Ash when it was being bench tested and glowed bright red.

Reminds me of the rotary Norton exhaust Ash when it was being bench tested and glowed bright red.

The later (one plug per rotor) NSU RO80 car had a warning in the handbook about not parking the vehicle on grass.

The catalytic convertor front pipe glowed cherry red despite all the heat shields there was a real fire risk.

I seem to remember the same advice for my VFR800. After the mild steel heatshield had rusted through and disintegrated.

I reckon if I did a better scan the 400/4 downpipes image would make great wallart for a man-cave/den 🤣🤣
