Barn find CB400/4 For sale
« on: October 07, 2026, 11:11:38 AM »
Good morning

I have a Barn Find 1974 CB400F/4 Supersport that I am looking to sell I was planning on rebuilding it but due to health reasons I am not able to do that so have decided to sell it.
Its in quite a state & will require a lot of work to return it to road worthy condition.
It has only 11,400 miles on the clock & I have been informed the the engine was started & ran last year.

It was imported from the USA in 1990.

Unfortunately for some reason I can't upload any pictures so if you can let me have a email address I send them.

Thanks

Rob.

Big question
Is it UK registered with a V5?

That's going to need a lot of work! Are the missing parts available?  😲

That looks like it was found in the local pond.

I think that one is for the brave to take on. It's going to be expensive.

Getting the parts necessary to restore it shouldn't be a problem - DSS likely has all of them.

But it would be quite an expensive project AND probably require a lot of time to do the restoration.  I've found that such projects always take far longer (and much more cash) than originally anticipated!  ;)

With the bike in that condition you might be better off parting it out.  OTOH, if priced low enough it might sell to someone who REALLY wants a 400F to restore, has deep pockets/plenty of time and really enjoys the satisfaction of doing the work!  As previously mentioned it needs to have a UK registration.  Regardless of price it would be a very tough sell if it doesn't.  Absent the V5 I would part it out.  Somebody will buy the parts!

In all honesty Rob I would expect a full nut & bolt restoration of that bike to cost north of £8k and that's assuming you strip the bike including the engine and reassemble it yourself (and do a lot of the other work such as polishing, cleaning and running around getting parts). It would be 100% worth trying to save the original tinware even if badly pitted, any pits can be filled with brass before re-plating.

It doesn’t have to be a full nut and bolt restoration though.  When I bought my 500 in 1995 it was a pile of bits. Many of the parts I bought to repair it were second hand, and I just wanted to make it mechanically sound and be something cheap and fun to ride.  It is rusty, scruffy but runs really well and gives great enjoyment , people are always complementing me about it.  For me it would depend on what the engine is like, everything else could be make to work without spending a fortune.

I just got my 350k going after 30 years standing.  All it cost was a gasket set, two tyres, inner tubes and rim tapes, plus rear brake shoes.  Everything else was simply cleaned and tidied.  All depends on what you want.
