Paint code for CB250 G5

Hi,
I have just started restoring a G5 part of my plans involve me spraying the tank and side paneles. does anyone know the paint code for the 1975 G5 Green please.

Sorry, what i should have said, but it does get boring saying the same thing over and over, is that there are No Industry Standard Paint codes for Hondas. If you know the name of the colour try RS paints who advertise in the Classic Bike--used to be in Bradford but i believe they mover south.

Be aware that if it is a Metallic Honda used a three pack system of Metallic (usually silver) pbase with a transparent colour second coat and then a laquer---all these are evil paints and need an air pressure mask to spray plus the colour changes depending on how manty coats.

Bryanj you may have said it many, many times and it may bore you but  I am new to this.  I cant be the first to try and match the original colour. to this end I thought this forum would be a good place to start.

No problem Billy, sometimes after a 14 hour, 600km night full of idiots i get a bit tetchy, my excuse is i am damn near 60 and have a 15 year old male teanager to contend with!

Appologies if needed, best idea is to go it your local dealer and get the part number for a green tank of thet year which will give you the Honda named colour and probably Hondas code and RS will be able to supply.

Hi Billy, I had a green CB360 G5 back in the days.  They were indistinguishable from the 250 if you took the side panel badges off [Which I did], other than it would stay  level with the local RD and GT 250s from the lights, then pull away from at 50 plus.  Happy days provided you didn't try it against an RD350 by mistake!!!!

The green tank and panels have a TQ suffix to the part number which translates to:  TQ Ilex Green Metallic Special in Honda's paint descriptions.

One problem with that is as was pointed out earlier in the thread this was a tinted laquer over a silver base coat, so was a challenge to match when new.

Honda provided small paint cans as a spare part in the 70's which were initially thought to be touch up cans, but they were actually intended to be  pigment to tint a clear coat to spray a whole panel.  The result of applying it neat with a paintbrush into a scratch was a near black line in place of a shiney silver one!

The problem now is that no-one seems to know what formulations using modern paints match the old Honda names and codes.  There is a similar chase going on at the moment to replicate Flake Saphire Blue .

Your best bets are to speak with specialists like Sunrise or find a NOS side panel to get a match mixed to original paint.

Good luck, and if it were easy there'd be no fun in restoring old bikes.

...the G5 isn't listed, thought the 360 might be the same as essentially they were the same bike but different bores .....

Hi Oddjob, they were essentially the same, but the differences were more than just the bore.

They were stroked too, so the cranks are different with bigger diameter gudgeon pins in the pistons.

The top crankcase has larger holes to accept the bigger diameter sleeves in the barels and the head is machined to miss the tops of the pistons at TDC: a squish ring around the combustion chamber. 

The carbs were bigger and the back sprocket smaller.

The side panel badges were different, but I can't recall anything else being different.

I got most of the spares for my CB360 G5 off crashed 250s whilst a student in the 70's!

I've taken a look at your blogspot now as I'm looking at a proper size screen and the cam and bearings look pretty good, though is that some pitting on the n/s inlet cam follower?

It is important to get a good supply of oil to the cam bearings as they pick up on the white metal facings in the head and cover very quickly. 

They don't have a proper paper oil filter, so it's worth changing the oil frequently and cleaning the rather basic centrifugal filter and oil pump pick-up screen regularly too.  That also gives warning if the cam chain tensioners are starting to lose bits of rubber as the bits end up stuck to the screen and eventually clog it. 

Another tip I remember is to not leave out the gasket under the finned points cover.  That places the inside of the cover too close to the points and conecting leads and can allow arcing and rough running.  It goes away every time you check the points, only to reappear when you put it all back together.

Perforated/split carb diaphragms also cause interesting missfires, initially in the mid range, but eventually affecting al but idle and full throttle, and old [Clogged] original air filters are more restrictive when damp.

This makes the bike sound unreliable, but I covered some 60,000 miles on mine, albeit with a few major rebuilds along the way, and I still have a fondness for them.

Much better than the 400/4 in my opinion! [Can I say that on here as it is SOHC and must have 4 of something?]
