Some time next year I will be attempting to put on a new wiring loom, CB 500/4 1974, but my ignition key is in between the clocks. All the looms I have seen has the ignition barrel under the tank left side, anyone know how I can be sure I get the right loom.

Your ignition barrel SHOULD be down on the left hand side as you sit on it, under the front of the tank, looks like a previous owner has fitted the later 550F/K3 ign switch and warning lights. It may also possibly be an import from the states, Bryan J will know for sure if you send him your frame number, the switchgear on the left bar looks like a later one as well:o

Difficult to tell from the pics but the only 500 that had the switch there was the 500K3 that never came to UK but did get to some European countries. If its a UK 500 somebody has fitted a complete 550K3 front possibly after a crash

The previous owner did do a lot of changes,4 into 1 exhaust,red white and blue colour scheme,he said he put a racing cam in, the swing arm is not original and thats probably why a 98 link drive chain didnt fit but a 100 link did.

Regarding the wiring loom do you reckon a 550 would fit, theres no comeback on replies, thanks for the info tho'.

If it has the original loom there should be a 4 pin block connector for the original ignition switch on a short wire near the coils, or evidence of alterations, it might help to identify it, also sometimes has a part number on the loom somewhere.

The wiring is a mess with a huge bunch in and near the headlight, not noticed any plugs or sockets near the coils.

I do have a spare new ignition switch that could possibly be attached to frame under tank, or wondering if the ignition wires could be extended to the clock area, just a thought. It'll be next year before I do any thing serious its too cold now.

Not a K3 with that tank. Does it have a multi plug on the back of the ignition switch?? Are you sure it is not a CB550 with a CB500 engine?

If you want to go back to standard any 72 onwards 500 or US 550 K0-K2 will fit but the US 550 has a "Safety Interlock" module to stop the starter working unless either the neutral light is on or the clutch lever pulled.

A 550 K3 loom will fit the switch you have and probably the handlebar switches DEPENDING on the type of starter button you have

I think we need some more pictures. Can not even see what type of headlight bowl is fitted.

Engine and frame is a cb500/4 hence the engine number and frame number.

All the electric fittings including those on the handlebars are listed exactly the same as those at David Silver website for cb500/4.

I have put new pistons,rings,gaskets and seals from the DS website.

I remember the old pistons where oversize perhaps it had a new head and every thing else standard.

What size would a 550 piston be ?

Looks like a CB500 to me. The clocks are CB550F. Someone has changed them along with the mounting bracket. Does it still have the ignition bracket down the left side? If so you could put a repro ignition switch and a loom from a CB500 four.
The CB550F loom is a little complicated as it has a box by the coils on the left hand side to fit all the bullet connectors in and your switch gear wires would not reach.

Oddjob, I think the 550F2 did not have the KM markings on the clock face and the 550K3 did in the UK.

I am not trusting part numbers ever again. The rubbers on the CB500K0 is the same as the CB500K1 and onwards but, the reflector is a lot smaller.
As Bryan pointed out that the parts book and the microfiche are wrong.

Look at the gearbox page trigg, it sez 2 of one selector and a total of 4!!
