Clutch basket

Has anyone reriveted a clutch basket on a 400/4, mine has a lot of backlash but is otherwise in good condition.  I don't want have to buy a new one.

I've ground the rivets off to investigate the cause of the backlash and found the rubbers had gone hard.  That was as far as I got.  I found another clutch basket with less backlash in my box of spares and used that.

I can't recall exactly who it was had a thread about this on here last year (or maybe the year before!) but a member was offering replacement rubbers for the basket, and re assembly involved tapping part of it to M5 and using bolts to replace the rivets. The long and short of it was yes it can be successfully done.

Okay, found it! It was member ttr400 that was offering the clutch rubbers. Use the search box on the CB350/400 forum page, type in clutch basket and it's in the results there. Can't post a link to it at the moment as I'm on my mobile and have no idea how to post links from it!:-X

That thread doesn't answer the question ; are replacement rubbers available and if so, where from.

I got some new dampers from ttr400 .... He's in South Africa btw.
He's a 400/4 nut !  Makes all sorts of parts for them and builds specials too.

He sent me the new moulded rubbers segments and the small bolts needed to re-assemble the gear to the basket.
I installed these to my clutch a couple of years ago. I haven't done any real mileabpge since.
There was little change in the noise from my engine which wasn't noisy to start with.
The old dampers in my clutch had not gone that hard - one of the rivets had lost its head
which made the repair worth while.

Update......
After a long trip across the States on his "touring special" 400/4 the supplier discovered that his clutch dampers are getting damaged by the oil or heat or both !!
I'm not sure if he has solved the problem yet.

Hi Guys,

Update on the clutch damper kit:

Correct in that they did not last with the heat or oil, I did around 13000 Km's. then started to hear a knocking sound from the basket. only managed to change them at around 18000 km's, by this time they had virtually disintegrated.

I am working on a getting them moulded with a material that can handle the temp/and or oil etc.

Will update when ready.

Note: my bike is in the UK at the moment and i will be going back to tour a bit more in June, so will also bring some of the new damper rubbers with me.

I'm up for a set of cush dampers in the new stuff when they are available !
The ones you sent me before were dark blue...... Would these be the same
"formula" material as the ones you life tested ?
Wondering what the japanese suppliers use these days in modern engines?

Should be a simple job to replace these next time around if the thread lock I used on the bolts can be overcome

No problem you can have a set for free when i have them ready. fitting will be the same as you have already done. the blue and red rubbers were the same formula.
I have managed to get hold of a new rubber that i am having analysed etc. most modern engines these days use springs instead of rubbers. later on this year i will be doing a complete basket kit with a new CNC machined basket.
