At last, managed to get out for the 1st time this year. Cold and sunny, roads dry, even the mud on the roads was dry 😂😂😂. It felt great to be back out again.

Lucky you, cold, sunny and dry,
Roads still wet and salty
But I am at the seaside

I don't know how this scurrilous rumours of me eating ice cream comes from,
I may very occasionally indulge, if the weather is warm, or I am away from home
Just a couple of photos, I was in Italy and it was very warm, so I declare these medicinal (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250202/4fb16ee2dc7b2f6074661cad20f377f8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250202/5cf6ba8c22b3da46b7c68f0c4cd9f7df.jpg)

Nice Mega cones as well. 8)

OMG... don't get me going again! I've got an addiction to icecream. I had (at home) six fruit splits and four Majestic in one evening a few days ago, I can eat a litre of vanilla icecream in 24 hours and do so a few times a month. If my GF wants to shut me up when I'm in her place she goes to the fridge to get one of those mini Magnums , because I quietly go into my own little world when I've got one! ;D I can't help myself honest!

Made the most of a nice day between the recent very cold weather and the forecast wind and rain and took Millie out for a blast for a couple of hours. It felt sooooo good, she's always such a happy little bike and definitely still makes me smile. Trig took his 250cdu as he's sold his 550 mongrel. A couple of hours gardening when back home so the perfect day.
-
Nice to get out on the bikes Julie! Gardening and nice day in the same sentence? 😂😂

I am hoping when I get back
The weather will be suitable for the bikes

We didn't have ice cream today but a fantastic Feta and Spinach pie and great coffee in Lincoln. Very spring like today with a top temperature of 10°.

John I do envy your ability to be able to still travel abroad for some R & R.
Back in the day Wendy & I really enjoyed the Greek Islands, Zakinthis held some very special memories.
I was always torn between Cyprus & Crete.
I think this photo was taken sometime around 1995 in the days when we always hired a bike when on holiday as a car was beyond our budget.

Not jealous at all!🤬 Nice to see though. Can only dream about it at the moment. Bikes still in hibernation here apart from current project.

Not quite as warm as Spain but nonetheless a very pleasant ride today. I'm sure I saw snow forecast for some parts of the UK next week 🙄🙄🙄.

We are having heavy frosts overnight - hopefully no snow though!

Same here with the heavy frosts but it's soon clearing in the morning sun. As much as I love snow, I could do without it now.

As i get even olderer and arthriticer snow becomes more demonic along with any low temperature
-
I used to love riding in the snow, especially when I was on early mornings and I was the first to ride through it.
This was before I could drive a car and only had the bike, nowadays unless there is a big big yellow thing in the sky and the sky is blue I do not go out on the bike.
Cheers
Dennis

Still gritting the roads up here most nights. Roads are white with salt. 😖
-
Very Spring-like yesterday with dry roads and 12C. Went for a blat on the 400/4 which is running well apart from a high tickover when hot.

It's dry, sunny and warm enough to ride the bike

Yes Johnny, we're going to do some touring around Europe this summer so thought we'd buy something we can use two up with room for a bit of luggage etc. It will be difficult me riding pillion, to me as a life long rider, it'll seems sooooo wrong sitting on the back 🤣🤣🤣🤣
-
Nice one Julie! Think you need another one!😜
-
It's still a sohc Julie 👍. Those engines are mega for reliability and longevity.
-
Great wee bikes those Transalps, bought an ex demo back in 1987 when they first came out.
That was before adventure tourers became a 'thing' so got a good deal on it as the shop was struggling to sell it on.
Anyhow, went off on a trip to Yugoslavia (before the Balkans war) and had a wonderful time.
Although cheated a bit by using the overnight motor-rail service from Calais to Toulon, then overnight ferry from Rimini to Split.
Only problem I had was that the carb used to ice up on high altitudes during the evenings, sort of felt like running on to reserve fuel tap, but pulled up for a few minutes until the heat from the engine warmed things up a bit and then away again no problem.
But as I'm sure you already know Julie, they're not motorway machines, better to stick to the smaller roads when possible.
Have fun
Skoti

What happened to equality Julie? Get your share on the controls!😁
-
I avoid being a pillion passenger, I can remember years ago trying to strangle my mate who was giving me a lift when he did something I thought was stupid, pure rage, I swore never again.
Cheers
Dennis
-
Pillions when you are the rider are ok if they are used to bikes but bike virgins not leaning with the bike. Aaah!
-
As a teenager I had a lift home on the back of my best mates Ariel Leader, we had a nasty accident on a country lane. (My Triumph was off the road with an engine breather valve fault)
I spent 3 months in traction in the old DRI on London Road,Derby followed by 3 weeks at Etwall Convalescence to learn to walk again. :( :( :(
Guess what, I've never been a pillion again, nor have I carried a pillion since that day.
My mate was a bit of a risk taker, I'm sure Graham has the experience to keep Julie safe being older and wiser than a 17 year old risk taker.
Before the accident I did have my younger brother as a pillion a couple of times, I would lean into a corner, he would lean in the opposite direction, a tad Laurel & Hardy. ;D ;D ;D

Ah, over the border in Notts.

Rode to Gloucestershire at the weekend, 160 miles round trip. Helped my friend put together his pre-war Norton 500.
I would have taken a photograph en route but it was too cold, my hands wouldn't operate the phone camera properly so I gave up. Great to be out and about though and hoping the weather warms up soon.
-
Should have come to visit! Would have put kettle on and even turned heating up
-
Sorry Brian, didn't think. Are you near to Nailsworth? I will be going back even if just to have another go on his bike ;D
-
Just the other side of the M5, about 1 1/2 miles from junction 12 towards Glos.
Was the Norton an ES2?
-
Might pop down later this year Bryan. I’ll let you know beforehand if I do.

no, Model 18.
Also has an 850 Commando which I rode. Fell in love with that, lovely to ride.
-
850 Commando, worked on lots of those the last ones had terrible build quality and problems in parts that should never fail, can give you hints on some if you wish
-
Thank you Bryan, very useful to know. They are all a bit beyond my price range sadly but you never know. My friend's one smokes a bit. I didn't let on but I thought it wasn't a good sign.
-
Depends on year but we found there was a bad batch of rocker spindles that wore quick and let excess oil onto the top of valve guides causing oil consumption and smoke, took 3 top end stripdowns to find that!
-
it's 1976 so it could be that, in which case not so much of a worry. Seems to calm down once warmed up.
-
Better when warm is more likely bore wear
-
OK, I'll tell him when he has passed the honeymoon phase. He only bought it last week. ;D
-
I'm not familiar with the model, does it have valve stem seals?
I've had cars that would smoke on first start up, then when part warm all would be okay.
-
Out today, a little Potter on the 200,after a an oil change for the new season
Then a run to Chepstow for the 500,
I thought I saw another 500/550 near There,

One blast with the Pan and a run out with the C90 is all I’ve managed so far this last week. Quite cold still but getting there. First time for a few years this one has been on the road but now 40+ year old and of course no mot required. Pumped up the tyres and adjusted drive chain as well as brakes, greased the silly suspension on the front and fitted new battery from Tayna. This will not be my first choice out of the stable but a few runs will do it good!
-
Careful with all that power Johnny! 😁
-
Indeed Gareth, not always about the journey!🤭
-
Nice bike Johnny and living proof you don't need a big bike and high speed to enjoy yourself👍.

Nice little bike Johnny, neat flagpole on the back of the rear carrier frame. A bit power sapping? ;)

To be fair to Roo he meant to say - metallic beige. ;D
I've probably mentiomed it before a mate I went to Tech with (Circa 1965-7) had a Honda C90, he lived with his Gran in Derby, he commuted back home to his parents in Wales most weekends on his C90 for the two years I knew him. It never let him down & was very economical. I always thought it was a nice little bike at the time.I lost touch with him when we finished our A levels course.
-
Years ago my mate Lez did John o groats to Lands End on a pushbike to raise money for a hospital after his youngest passed through likemia at 5, another mate shadowed him on a C 90 all the way and was astounded at how quiet it was after i seviced it before the ride, he had had it many years and didnt even know the cam chain was adjustable

In Leeds they were called skidders but where I grew up they weree always refered to as the 'Dog Box'. Presumably they were used to put dogs in the top box ;D You can see where I get my reasoning from? ;D Purely a Yorkshire term Johnny and mentioned with affection, like i said, you gotta love a dog box :D :D
An ex of mine had a really early 50cc that she used to go the stables on twice a day, this is 20 years ago now, it was a bit of a knacker but it never died, always ran sweetly and was too scruffy to steal so was ideal. If I remember roghtly, she used to put £2.00 of fuel in it a week, it was ace!
I think she still has it today in the garage with the original kidney splitter on the front under a sheet.
Alright, 'Vanilla', is that better? ;D ;D ;D
-
I'd have said Rose Gold
-
The C90 was sure better than my Minow back in the day a NSU Quickly.
-
People forget that the 50 and 70 were very similar engines but the 90 was a totaly different beast, forget how many of the leading link plastic bushes i changed for mot passes

You can't be too careful on a step thru Honda.
Fallen off quite a few times but my only real accident 22 years ago. Not my fault I hasten to add and I received a good deal of compensation. Bought a CB500 with some of it. Even then Bryanj was sorting problems and answering questions on the net.
-
Well i am over 70 now!
-
I think the 90 was the first motorcycle that I rode. My older brother had one and I borrowed it 😳 I set off and managed to return it in one piece. Don’t think he ever found out, neither did the local plod, I was 14. I’m not sure the correct colour description but I have seen it referred to as light copper metallic.
-
My Dad had a C50 he used for commuting to work, a red one. If my knackered old Bantam was off the road - again - I could borrow it when he didn't need it. I used it to go and see my girlfriend and used to wring it's neck to get some speed out of it. It never broke, the engine was unburstable!
I did take my girlfriend out for a ride on it once. Very embarrassing when it wouldn't get up a hill 2up and she had to get off!

I was out for a test drive back in the 1970's with a lovely couple who lived on a very steep section of Henhurst Hill in BoT.
They were both what we termed back then as fat, they wanted to show the Mother-in-Law the used car. It was an NSU Prinz an air cooled 2 cylinder model. It would not go up the hill with the three of us in it, when one of the passengers got out it made it to their house. To my surprise they bought it!
-
Sorry no photos but I had quite an interesting ride into central London. On the Victoria Embankment I was just in the right place to tag on behind King Charles and his motorcade, great for getting through the traffic, that lasted about a mile. I got to Parliament square where there was a whole gaggle of protest marches going on, partly because of the Chancellors spring statement. That garlic f*rting Steve Bray was there as usual with his daft top hat and die hard followers. We know each other , boy he HATES me ;D and with the static traffic we had plenty of time to trade insults! ;D
-
I had a very nice run out to the west mainland to the Brough of Birsay where the tide quite quickly floods and submerges the pathway, there’s nearly always someone that has to get the socks and shoes off to get back to safety.

Also nice visit to see a fellow SOHC member Ian.

-
Over in Austria today.
1st May a holiday in those parts.
-
Ferry back to base.
-
Europe has had some glorious weather the past few days. It was 29.3c in London today, ice cream weather 8)
The 750 looks fantastic in the sunshine, the ferry must be a great way to travel between islands knowing you can ride off into the sunshine.
Does your paint colour attract bees and green fly as my yellow 400/4 does?

Never noticed bees and green fly attracted to the yellow paintwork but oilseed rape fly splatter seems to blend in well.
Tomorrow the rain starts again for a few days, but at least the salt's gone now.
-
When I was in the trade yellow cars in the showroom always attracted flies who would leave their small circular deposit on the paintwork. Ochre was the worst colour, we called it the Dandelion effect. Same when wearing a Yellow shirt if you are in the Countryside.

if anyone is near the Cotswolds,
this wednesday evening the Biker bunch are taking over Morton in the Marsh,
the weather seems OK,
come and visit.

May 1st :Interesting afternoon! I rode down to the Blackheath Tea Hut on my CB400F2, a bikers haunt ( see pic from a few years ago) but there was hardly anyone there, which turned out to be helpful. While guzzling coke and pigging out on a giant Belgian bun, a lady rode up who I've seen once before. We start talking then she ( Jane) mentions she had been a 1980s London dispatch rider and radio controller. We quickly discover we knew each other nearly forty years ago! She had ridden with me in a small company called Falcon, (see pic of me those days) and she was the radio controller when I later rode for a big company called Addison Lee. Lots of yak yak yak about days gone by from a life style that the computer and Internet basically destroyed. A bit a of a serendipity, :) shame I didn't have the camera.
-
That's a great story George and especially considering London is such a big city. To bump into somebody you knew 40 years ago is amazing. It was probably the mighty CB250RS she remembers :)

Nah....it was probably the ear holeings I got off her when she was a radio controller! ;D
-
A bit late but the site was down on Good Friday. I went to the latest Rolling Thunder Ride in London on Good Friday. I won't discuss the politics of it , but this veteran's ride and gathering is great fun and socializing for someone like me. I didn't have my camera so I did a screen grab of a youtube and got a couple of someone else who went, We had Whitehall all to ourselves as well. ;)
1) Spot my Elen in the crowd
2)Ugly rider spotted on youtube
3)Me
4) Me again.... ;D

Looks like a well attended event with quite a number of spectators lining the streets. Great excuse for a ride out. Not that we need an excuse!😂

A lovely sunny morning spent at Kempton Park Autojumble and Bike Show today (I took the RE650).
I spotted a Honda 50, C Reg and in need of a total rebuild, £1300 was the rather hopeful asking price.
I found a TL125 for anyone wishing to bring something back from the brink, this one had no engine and was in a very sorry state, yours for 'only' £700 ;D.
It was the usual show of bikes in the actual bike show, very few new bikes on display from one year to the next although there was a lovely NUT (I think it won Stafford in April) and a Joey Dunlop / Wayne Gardner Honda RSC850.
At least I bought some polishing mops, LED's for the TL along with breather hose etc. Lovely ride over to Kempton but a nighmare ride home, all the idiots are out today in their tin boxes not looking where they are going!
-
Glad you had a good day Dave, Post Office said they will try redelivery monday!

I managed to get an hour on the CB750 this afternoon. I didn’t see half as many bikes out on the road as I thought I might, the weather is perfect.

I thought I'd make the most of the lovely weather today and take a break from the TL build so decided to give the restored 400/4 AKA 'Rat Bike' or as it is now called ‘The Flying Banana’ for its first proper shakedown run. Although I completed the rebuild in November 2024 the weather was pants by then so I just did a quick blast around the block and put the bike into hibernation for the winter.
I duly filled up with some fresh V-Power and headed out for Little Kimble in Bucks. My timing was impeccable because as I approached Amersham it poured with heavy rain in the form of hailstones! I parked up and had a coffee whilst the storm passed. I headed home wearing a very wet mesh summer riding jacket!
The bike went really well during the 45 miles, I’m keeping the revs down to 4500 for the first 100 miles and will then take it up to 5000rpm for the next 400 miles without labouring the engine. The clutch will need some adjusting as new plates are bedding in and I have a rear l/h indicator the appears to have a bad earth or worn contact (thanks Bryan).
-
I duly filled up with some fresh V-Power and ...
Sorry about the rain Dave, maybe it waiting for you! :o OK, what is special about V power (Shell) ? Should I give up my Nectar points at Esso for it?
-
No ethanol George.
-
And it doesn't go off after a few weeks either George.
It's the only fuel I use and luckily I have a Shell garage a couple of miles away with cheap fuel because there's a Sainsbury's and an Asda both with cheap petrol within a mile of it.
-
I always use Shell in the Honda, the cars get cheap stuff, and it seems to work well for the Honda.
Cheers
Dennis
-
Lovely that Dave.
When you get that past 5k it will pull your arms off..... being yellow of course.🙃
-
No ethanol George.
I though that the case with E5 petrol, but no it has 5% ::) ok, the Shell garage isn't far from here...
-
UK Shell V Power does contain ethanol
Shell Regular Unleaded contains up to 10% ethanol following the governments E10 introduction in 2021, whilst Shell V-Power Unleaded contains no more than 5%. This is in accordance with current UK specification requirements.5 May 2025
-
UK Shell V Power does contain ethanol
Back to square one then. I see it may only be available for a few more years too.
-
My understanding is that Shell SUL is marked E5 to comply with legislation i.e. no more than 5% Ethanol, there is a lot on the internet to the effect that it contains no Ethanol at all it is also a higher cotane rating of 99RON. The Shell website does not even mention that VPower contains Ethanol.
www.shell.co.uk/fuels-oils-and-coolants/shell-fuels/v-power-unleaded.html
-
That was my understanding as well Ted, has to be marked as having up to 5% but actually doesn't have any along with the BP Ultimate.
-
Lovely that Dave.

You are right there Tim. Rumour has it that Honda trialled the fitting of a supercharger to the yellow ones but found it out performed the CB750 and it tied the frame in knots above 9500rpm when it reached 140mph (with more to come). They dropped the plan and instead painted the Honda CB750F1 to match the yellow 400/4. As I say, it's just a rumour and can't possibly be verified 8).

Not sure how adding dyed water to the petrol in the Breeze Blocked laboratory is a reliable scientific basis to judge Shell E5 Ethanol content or how cleanly it burns.
The prices quoted for Shell SUL seem off the scale, in Derby it's 164.9, BP SUL is 150.7 locally, the price difference between E10 & E5 is 29p.

Different, GT 750 clocks on the RE5 and disc braked, unit engined Triton
-
Triton looks all wrong...I wonder if it's just the angle of the piccies? Start point is the tyres are odd...too small or too low profile?
Then the rest just looks like all the right bits, but they don't seem to meld together very well - I'm sure if the wheels/tyres were right it would look ok. ( Disclaimer...I'm not knocking someone else's build as I know it's all personal and always takes a lot of work!).
-
It's always difficult to build a Triton with a unit engine. There's a lot of 'open space' to deal with around it hence why the purists go for a pre unit motor, a bit more spaced out.
Dave Degans got the right combination with the unit motor in the Dresda. The front engine plates pushed the motor back a little to fill the gaps. The shape of the oil tank is also critical, again to fill the gaps. Same with the fuel tank, I deliberately used a short circuit tank on mine that sits on top of the frame rails with little overhang at the sides. Fitting a big Manx style tank accentuates the unit engine making it look a bit lost in a wideline frame.
But....as Andy rightfully states, it's how the builder wanted to build it and building a good looking and functional Triton isn't easy so hats off to anyone who attempts to build one👍
-
I don't particularly like the disc brake though on it, just doesn't suit it although I can understand why it is fitted, he wants to stop!
I've seen a couple of Tritons that have used the Honda CBX550 inboard disc brakes fitted to spiked rims and suitably machined, they both looked fantastic, like a drum but actually stops.
I looked into doing the same but anyone with a CBX550 front brake knows exactly what they are worth and used for these days.
-
And whats more a rear pia to work on!
-

There's other concept too https://www.quattroworld.com/audi-news/audis-world-ufo-brakes-worked-also-kinda-didnt/ shows an interesting design.
It wouldn't be that difficult to get something like a drum looking hub with spoke facility to house one of these, then a Buell internal type caliper arrangement modded to use.

Come on Dave show us yours!!
-
Here you go Tim. I fitted what is called 'swan neck' clip-ons, I'm too old and inflexible now to ride with my chin on the tank 🙄. I'm still to run it in!
-
Thats a lovely looking Triton Dave, back in the 1960's there was always the odd Triton in the bike sheds at Derby Technical College, none looked half as nice as yours.
-
Thank you Ted.
I've changed the front and rear mudguards since those photos were taken because I didn't like the gap between the rear guard and wheel. I fitted Dunstal pattern guards that fit a lot closer and follow the line of the wheel. That's the trouble with building a special, it's never finished!

Very nice Triton

They are Bryan with the top fin cut off. The motor runs short rods but still a 750.

I went and collected my kit from them 76 ish when they had a "few" Rickman Interceptors for sale, wish i could have afforded one!
From memory it started white smoking after a few thousand miles due to iffy rings, i think Charlies in Bristol said they were BSA A65plus 20 but cant guarantee that it was lots of guiness ago!

Have been out riding quite a bit recently but not taken any photos.

I took a ride to the Cutty Sark expecting the Rotherhithe tunnel to be chocker-block because the new Silvertown Tunnel is already closed again for 17 days ( what could possibly have gone wrong? ;D ) but no, mostly motorcycling par excellence ( by London standards) all the way to Greenwich maritime just for once, then off to the best view in London by the Royal Observatory Greenwich, right on the meridian line. I sat on the plinth of General Wolfe's statue that is also there and soak in view 8). You can actually park without fee or fear up there ( yes really, in London! ) and when I went back to my bike a very nice Japanese lady was taking pictures of Elen, my CB400F2.
She says 'can I takee picture of you? Velly nice bike, I have one likee this when I was a girl too!' ;D
-
Great views George and always a bonus to find free parking in London👍. Maybe the Japanese lady wanted to buy Elen🙂

WOW Julie! I went up Grossglockner pass in the summer of 1972 with my parents and younger brother. We did it in a 1970s FIAT 124 Sedan without even breaking down! :o
Only the higher peak had some snow but we could see a dot on it, a man skiing up there. We had trouble getting off the pass because dad had mislaid the tickets and the traditionally dressed girl checking tickets made us park in a layby until he found them, my mum had them all the time lol ;D ..the rest of the trip an argument, all the while I was gagging for a fag and they knew it too! ;)
-
Great scenery Julie, been up in about the dolomites but only by coach. Interesting and a touch precarious road trip in the bus, definately more suited to two wheels.
-
Done the gross a few times, but the best was when 4 cyclists riding Bromptons and dressed as beefeaters arrived at the motorcyclist ‘view point’. All credit to them. The SKY cycling team was present at the time and they treated them very well. It was really funny seeing a Beefeater on the massage table😅😅
-
It's amazing how many people cycle up these mountains, not using electric push bikes, just normal racing push bikes, bloody nutters 😂😂😂😂.
-
Driving home yesterday I came to the (river) ford near my house to find an adventure bike/dual sport thingy on its side in the water with rider and his mate trying to pick it up ( I think his mate was on a KTM Duke, not sure what his was..but similar). Didn't need my help. Was a medium bike, not a GS, and the riders had full leathers on.
The phrase 'all the gear, no idea' came to mind - which may have been unfair as they could be very experienced and just been unlucky, but as the guy said to me...it's very slippy in there. Yes...that will be because the road under the water is green and slimy! Tyres on the KTM certainly weren't made for it. I imagine that with all the nice leathers/ boots on he wasn't going through with feet down. But even so, it would only take a tiny bit of throttle to get the back wheel spinning on the slime and chuck him off. I'm not sure I would ride through it and it's a road I avoid on motorbikes. Take care in fords...I didn't like to take a piccie of his misfortune!

My brother rode up the Grossglockner about 30 years ago on his Mercian iirc, he did say he stopped a couple of times and walked a couple of bendy sections, he said descending was much scarier.

On recent trips to Wales I called in at the 2 Baffle Haus cafe locations. One is near Abergavenny and the other one on the A48 west of Cardiff (Old Post). Great atmosphere, good food and not ridiculous prices either. They're part owned by George North, the Welsh rugby international and keen bike fan.

I used to hang-glide off there in the 70s and 80s. Tough climb up with the dangle glider on your shoulder!
Do you remember Gerry Breen??
Sent from my SM-A546E using Tapatalk
Small world, as my father worked with him in making some of his earlier aircraft, I remember the welding (my dad welding) of aluminium tubes with oxy acetylene in parts of the construction. Also have a "first day cover" I think its called, for postal delivery by hang glider by Gerry somewhere.
Last heard of him some time ago running hang glider flights in Algarve area of Portugal quite a few years back.

There's good history record direct from Gerry hear for anyone interested https://www.british-hang-gliding-history.com/flyers/gerry-breen.html quite a pioneering involvement.

That's a good read. Reminded me of some names from the past.
Gerry Breen flew his early powered hang-glider in the Raf St Athan Air display one year. The smallest and slowest aircraft in the show!

Interesting read. I was with Colin Rider when he broke the British hang gliding altitude record in 1987 (possibly 1988). He rode wave lift up to around 13,500ft above Wether Fell near Haws, Yorkshire. I bottled it at around 6,600 feet and landed back at launch. The hardest thing was getting down as the lift was really strong and I had to side slip what seemed to be forever. I bet that record still stands today.

I know we're well off topic here, sorry folks. 😁
Do you know Noel Whittall? I knew him through the BHGA committee and still have the signed copy of his book that he gave me.
-
Yes, both Noel and his son, Robbie. Robbie lives in New Zealand and runs a paragliding manufacturing company. I believe Rob was both Hang gliding and paragliding world champ and has also raced motorcycles on the IOM in the Manx GP. Obviously I knew Noel some 40 years ago and not that well. I recall that Noel was one of the forerunners in the Yorkshire hang glider community.
I was taught by a guy called Keith Cockcroft (RIP) on Baildon Moor.

Loving the photos on here and interesting about you guys hang gliding experience. I thought about it at one point but was told it will be a lot of hanging around!🤣
Love the patina on that Old Ford truck. Reminds me of the antics of Derek in the Vice Grip Garage.

Well, unsurprisingly the wee CB two fifty never used a drop of engine oil but I must confess to a drop or two of single malt plus two litres of 2 stroke oil.
Photo taken at Glencoe village about two weeks ago.

Ted, I too was wondering about that chain guard, I seem to remember seeing them advertised in Bike magazine during the late seventies and early eighties.
But the one fitted to that 500 four is the first one I've seen in the flesh.
-
I have a Peter Furlong fibre glass enclosure chain guard,
No at the end of it's life,
It worked very well, not as tidy or robust as that one,
I think the best cases were the MZ style
But the poor roads in the UK have shaken mine to almost destruction

After stopping up at the Flash cafe we then happened upon a Sunday meeting at the Bulls Head, it's somewhere in the Peak district.
Some of you may recognise it.

Monyash just outside Bakewell?

Aye,
Monyash it is, we were on the way from Winsford to Retford and trying to avoid main roads.
Trouble is with sat nav you input A to B without looking at a paper map and therefore have no idea where you are.
Anyway the Peak District is really nice for motorcycling.

The RAF jets in the 1st and 2nd photo I recognise.
They're Czech made Aero L-39's, now very old technology and mostly sold to third world countries.
I often see them flying across here, the Czech Airforce now use them for pilot training.

Gareth,
they look very similar, but the Aero has the jet scoops set further back on the fuselage.
Thanks for correcting me.
I see that the RAF do seem to use Czech made Aero jets tho.

I got caught up in this last night. I was riding home after roaming south of the river for ridings sake when on the south side of Tower Bridge I had to stop because the Tower Bridge got raised to let a tall barge through, being on a motorbike I was able to drive right up to the road barrier and dismount. Then the bridge started to lower again when some young man shouting in a foreign language climbed over the railings and started running to the middle of the bridge as it came down. I thought it was a social media stunt, but then he sat on the rail of the bridge that had stopped lowering just before the two sides met. He was waving an orange bag about and I wondered in 'Just Stop Oil' were up to their tricks again, then someone said he sounded like a Palestinian. Well, he didn't explode so I don't think so. :o But it caused utter chaos whatever his issue. >:( I gave up waiting after about an hour and went home via the Rothehithe tunnel instead, at least I could do that this time. In the 1990s I was working on a river boat and walking home over the Tower Bridge was my only option. A 'jumper' who we had seen from the boat earlier when sailing under the bridge was still there and I had to wait hours before they managed to talk him down and let everyone proceed. These people are most inconvenient! ::)

You may already know this George but Tower Bridge has (or had) a mortuary. Apparently anyone who jumped into the Thames would get carried out and back in again with the tides. There's a quirk about the river at Tower Bridge that bodies eventually end up there hence the need for a mortuary. I don't know if it's an urban myth but I've heard that story told on a number of occasions.

I know about it, true! :) It's called Dead man's hole they don't use it anymore though. For reasons known to Father Thames bodies tended to gravitate towards the pool of London anyway so Tower Bridge as a working place with engine rooms et al came in handy. ;)

They are really nice old school bikes.
I nearly bought one brand new in 1981, a TS250 Supa 5 from Geoff Dodkin Motorcycles in East Sheen (it was that or a CZ250 Custom). Alas my mum wouldn't sign the hp papers.
A mate of mine had one though, a blue one, he got chased by a big dog, fell off it and sold it!

They are sooo slow as a single and the owner has attached a sidecar to knock the performance off it. It really would be quicker (and safer) to walk. Lovely looking outfit though 🙂👍

France just keeps on giving.. I was out for a drive today and spotted these in a local garage, and they kindly let me photograph them. The Flandria (Belgian, apparently, but a new one to me) was my pick of the bunch ...close up is of it's engine, which had a cover over the fins, which seemed to negate having cooling fins to start with!
-
The Flandria has a intake to fan on opposite side, that to blow air across the cylinder from left to right when sitting on it .... the cowel keeping the air in contact with fins. Probably quite effective.
Some interesting bikes you've found on your travels :)
-
It really is a little hair-dryer then! It looked fab though, really nicely restored.
Regarding the interesting bikes, there are also lots of cracking older and old/ restored cars..the sun must be bringing them out. This beauty was in the carpark when I pulled up to photograph the Flandria.

Isnt that a CX?
-
Yes - it's a CX. The DS was it's predecessor.
I thought my XC70 was a big estate, but this is huge.
I did see a DS - a convertible model - shortly after this, but I was driving and it was tucked away in a drive so I didn't get a piccie! I might cruise past again later.
Also, and as it's near the beach, there are a number of Citroen Mehari's which I only ever seen over here.
-
Those are 2cv or Ami8.
The DS had one big service problem, 16 workshop hours to change a starter! The CX was a nightmare to do a clutch on!
-
The white one is a Citroen Mehari. Based on a 2CV. Even used by the French army as a jeep substitute.
-
A lot of speedway riders used the DS because there was so much room in the back they could get a speedway bike in there without taking the wheels off!
-
Yesterday I went to Wells and saw this amazingly smart 550 and spoke to the rider. Don’t know if it’s anyone here?

I drove past Seaways cafe in Fridaythorpe today (on the York to Driffield road). Looks like a cracking biker cafe to stop at - if anyone is in the area, give it a try! (No piccies as I was in the Volvo taking my elderly dad for a drive).

Nimbus, new one on me? 4 pots too!
British?
-
I think they were Danish Tim. I understand they were mainly used by the post office, very underpowered but also very sturdy hence their adoption by the post office. They stayed on production I think until the 1960’s.
-
This guy used a Nimbus for this gorgeous one-off bike. I first saw it in the flesh at the Bike Shed Show a couple of years ago. Classic Bike Guide wrote a full feature on it a few months later detailing how he built it, amazing talent.
If you look closely you can see he's used CBX550 inboard disc brakes on the front wheel, that's where I got the idea to do a similar set up for my Triton but unfortunately all the custom builders want to do the same now and used CBX550 front brake set ups now cost ££££'s if you can even find any for sale!

Thats some machine. Is it me or does it have Harley V rod vibes?

But I seem to remember the Suzuki GT750 kettles being the smoking kings of the time though.
What are the concrete items in the background of the photo, some coastal erosion things maybe?

These ones are stock piled from an eighties project to build a roll on roll off ferry which would have been the nearest point to Scottish mainland. But it was ill fated and miss managed and didn’t quite come off. They are used for break water barriers. Very effective! Was having a chuckle at them checking fuel levels after just 20odd mile.🤭 These are lovely old bikes. Thankfully we are all matured a bit and didnt have to “wring their necks”

My neighbour has just restored a kettle. Yes smokey but very loud with spannies. Sounds great pulling away but tries the good neighbour relationship when revved on the drive.😜🤔🙃

Kettle should smoke much when warm unless crank seals bad, once had a KH 250 that did 15mpg and worked on a "modified" kettle that did 7mpg

Saw this little one at the Nuthampsted Airfield Museum / Woodman pub today. 52k miles but I think they can go on forever.... I've always liked the look of them and it makes me think I have a bit of space in my garage...

Out on the bike, about 90mile trip, sunny, but cold breeze
Even refitted the lining to my jacket

We had our charity run yesterday for the Peedie Retreat (a proposed facility for respite for families with cancer and other illnesses by Inganess Beach in Orkney). A mixed day weather-wise - strong, swappy winds and some showers but 128 bikes made it a great day and over £10,000 was raised.
I went on the 550F1 (from James H) but there were quite a few classics - 2 550's from Johnny (no, he's not that clever - a mate rode the other one) living out in the 'Wild West' about 20 miles from the start and finish in Kirkwall, I clocked up just shy of 100 miles and the bike behaved perfectly. The only down-side was getting a bottle of single malt for being the oldest rider at 76! Hey ho!

What a great run it was Ian thoroughly enjoyed it. When I looked at the outdoor temp before I left the house it was 5.9c wind chill. With this in mind I piled on the clothes finishing off with the waterproof oversuit. (These things are great) Of course you have to remember it renders all pockets inaccessible!😳 and you can forget about a comfort break! When I arrived home about 5 hours from setting off I was about to burst with the urge, of course there is never ever a convenient time to have a zipper jam but it happened with my bike jacket!😡 in desperation to end up with I had to wriggle the jacket over my head like Houdini from a straight jacket only then could I access my under suit zipper!🤣🤣
If only there was a video!! Congrats at winning something Ian, if you keep this up I’m never going to win!😂

I took advantage of the great weather this week and and went for a bimble around Fife.
Stopped off at Crail Harbour for the old pee break.

Nice photos, Crail harbour and also St Abbs harbour further south are I think the gems of the Scottish east coast.
CB400f also looking nice, well done.

Thanks Skoti. Crail, Anstruther, Elie, Pittenweem, they've all got character. 👍

My daughter had a few small jobs that she needed doing today that I could manage with her own limited tool kit, so I made the most of the sunshine and took the 40 mile long way round to her new home which is 2.4 miles away, it was lovely out there. Looks lovely John. I didn't get out on the bike today, after a hospital appointment and walking the dog I didn't have the energy. A couple of pics of Costa del Broughty Ferry looking south towards St Andrews, with Jamie. 🐾

It was beautiful here this morning, we got out for a few hours on the Transalp. They give the weather to be pretty shite here for the next couple of days, so no riding for a while.

Loves finding a patch of sun in the garden and sunbathing. 14 years old now, unfortunately old age catching with with her, like the rest us she’s in denial.

I would love a dog as brought up with them during childhood and beyond. I thought we'd get one once I'd retired but I now appear to be out and about more then when I was working!
However, when mum very sadly passed away in June at the grand age of 91 she left her budgie called Monty 'orphaned'. We took him home and here he is now. He's a very happy little soul, always singing (and always it seems during bike racing on TV) and he is a last link to mum.
I know he's not a dog and I can't take him for a walk but he does send tweets🦜🙂

Iv decided not to use the bikes for awhile as not having much luck lately.
Used the pegaso and someone tried to steal it from Colchester. Luckily being Italian it went into self district mode and the front sprocket came off before it even moved 6 feet.
Thursday night some scumbag traveler stole my transit tipper.
Today I went to take my recently purchased Tiger for it's maiden voyage and binned it joining the road behind my house. ;D
-
Oh bloody hell Mick, I hope you're not too damaged 🤔
-
I'm fine. Just dented my pride.
The bikes not too badly damaged rear peg, crash bar and hand guard.
I bought it cheap so not too fussed
