Stripped the top end today, looks like we have found the issue of the low compression. The cylinder head gasket was blowing on cylinders 1&2, as we lifted the head off the gasket was already in 2 parts. The exhaust valves need a good clean up and possibly a relap for all 8 valves. The pistons and rings all appear to be in good order.

There was oil around the head stud at the front between cylinders 1&2, going to check the head isn't warped.

The compression was around 90 dry and 130 with the squirt of oil when I tried it a while ago

Ian, there was petrol in the oil, now drained, still not sure how it got there.

Yes it has been running

As far as I know, the bike has only done 18000 miles, the compression is on the low side, max 90 - 130psi with the throttle wide open, so we are going to have a look at the valves and rings.

Carbs have been removed, flushed and refilled while on a bench, angled 2.5 degrees forward as per when fitted on the bike, and they are not overflowing/leaking.

While the carbs are out, stripping the head and barrels to have a look in there too

If I have an auxiliary fuel fitted with the main tank off. If I fill the auxiliary tank it drains to fill the carbs, but continues to drain somewhere until the tank is empty, adding more fuel it continues to drain, the carbs are not overflowing.

Has anyone experienced similar and fixed the issue?

Welcome to the forum. Nice bike, US import?

Yes, it came into the country about 4 years ago.

Send them to Matt Harper at Harper Ultrasonics.
I could be wrong but I think Gerben may have retired.

Thanks Julie, just down the road from me. I’ll certainly given him a call.

Matt has around a 6 week lead time before looking at the carbs, after I messed up my rebuild I took them to him, I believe it was £220 + any parts

Not Wales or the Isle of White, but Shropshire.

I have a 77 CB550 F2 which I'm recommissioning, carbs have been rebuilt (still need setting up correctly) tank and side panels repaired and sprayed.

I'm sure I will have questions to ask, and hopefully in time will be able to answer others questions.
