What markings are the original needles stamped with? You may need a magnifying glass to see.

Not sure why you have 022a carbs as those are european carbs iirc. What model is yours?

CB500/550 / New needles don't fit!
« Last post by bbrian66 on October 09, 2026, 03:09:22 PM »
Just opened the new carb refurb kits. The new needles have a step in them exactly half an inch below the lowest of the circlip groves. The needles are all very slightly fatter above the step and won't fit through the throttle valve. Nor will they fit fully into the emulsion tube. (Carbs are 022A)
Have I missed something? Or have I bought a Duff set of refurb kits?

Hi Dave - that's really impressive. Do you still have the tool? Would you be willing to stamp out a set for me? I'd happily pay.
To be clear,  these are for the choke shaft which is only about 6-7mm dia.

I made some using a home made 'cookie cutter' and some wool felt.

An Update - You have to laugh!

So, I ordered new coils, and while waiting for them, i decided to remove the carbs again and go through everything one more time, albeit a bit slower.

I rechecked the float heights and depending on how you had the bowls tilted, they were either spot on or miles out! So I redid them and stuck them back on the bike, only to see No 2 leaking!

You live and learn, so i took them off again and went through the process again - however this time, I stuck a bit of clear tube in the drain holes of 3 and 4 before filling with petrol on the bench. One overflowed and the other was not filling up. So off with the bowls again and repeat the process, which i must of done 4 or 5 times until both bowls were filling to just below where the bowl meets the main body. I repeated the process for 1&2 and eventually got those the same. This process seems to be an art; I even made a float height template using an old credit card, which saved me loads of measuring time.

While I had the carbs off, I also checked all the slider needles; they had the circlip on pos 2, and I cleaned and blew through everything in sight. Also did Bryans bench sync again.

Carbs back on.

New coils arrived a few days later; I decided to test them with my multimeter, only to discover that they also had the same readings as my originals.  Turns out I don't know how to use a multimeter correctly, i had it on the wrong setting. Now I'm getting the correct reading on the secondary, so I went back to my original coils and lo and behold they are OK! I double checked the caps and ht leads and they are within spec.

Put them back on the bike, and start the old girl up. With the chock on, it didn't want to know, but as soon as i took it off the bike, it started and, at a sensible rev limit, no racing to 6000rpm. It was running a bit lumpy, which I put down to needing to go through the tuning process, but also discovered No. 4 was not firing - which is where I started all this!

Turns out the spark plug is dead! I've ordered 4 new ones.

Hopefully, with the new plugs installed, I can start the tuning process with a bit more confidence!

The new coils are being returned.

incredibly smart 500.  I can't believe even the inside of the mudguard is clean and shining!
I take no credit whatsoever for how clean my bikes are, that's Triggers department. I hate cleaning bikes with a passion, I always have done. Saying that, I think Kitty has had 1 wash this year, what with the lack of rain and mud so far, she was more dusty than anything.

CB500/550 / Carb spindle seal

Does anyone know where I can find the felt seals that go on the butterfly spindles on the carburettors?

I stripped my carbs to clean them. Im now thinking I should not have removed the butterflies or the spindles as some of the tiny felt seals have been damaged or lost in the process.  ARRGH!

A quick shout out for Nurse Julie, for her help in reducing parts prices.

As an example David Silver charges £46 plus P&P for 6 genuine CB750 rubber pucks under cam carrier.

Julie's price is £15 to members here plus P&P  :)

Honda/DS/CSMNL prices for small genuine Honda rubber parts is crazy.

Don't even think about the genuine rubber inserts for cylinder fins DS price is £10.20 and there is 20 so to replace all would cost £204 pus P&P  :o
Thanks Martin, I try my best. If you do need the rubber fin inserts, I think I've still got some and they won't cost anywhere near £204.00 that's for sure.
