Clutch Cable Adjustment - Understanding Question
« on: Today at 03:42:29 PM »
I'm trying to install a new clutch cable, and I've got to the bit where I have to adjust the actuator arm so it matches up to a mark on the case by turning the clutch adjuster screw.

When I turn the screw, nothing happens; the arm doesn't move up or down.  i found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQlyYfTVQrA  that shows what my adjuster arm is like, and its got me wondering whether this is correct and i'm missing something with the adjuster, or if something is out of whack with the internal mechanism.

I can't find anything to explain this, so before I drain all the oil out, and pop the side cover off, can anyone explain what normal should look like and why mine seemingly isn't? It's quite possible i put it together incorrectly when i had the side cover off.

Many thanks.

First off Neil, there is no need to drain the oil. Just rest the bike on it's side stand. That should be enough for the oil to drain to the left side and removal of the clutch cover will be ok. You may lose a little oil but you'd lose the same or more draining the oil.

Did you by any chance move the lever when the clutch cover was off. It operates on a cam and moving it can cause the large compressor lever to go past the cams biggest point and it flicks out. This means it doesn't matter what the outer lever does, it won't work. You need to remove the cover and refit the cam in the proper position. It's easier to do than describe TBH. I presume you remembered the bar bell shaped metal piece when fitting the clutch?

I do remember moving the lever inside and i did play with it and it snapped out so i relocated it, perhaps incorrectly. Now i think i know how it operates i can test the adjustment bit after i have reset it, before putting everything back.  Thanks for the tip about the oil, not sure i'm brave enough to try!

Try it Neil. It works. Just leave it to drain across for 10 minutes or so.

If in doubt post a pic of the mechanism and we can advise on whether it looks correct or not.
