Clutch Switch wiring
« on: May 04, 2017, 04:36:33 PM »
Can anyone help me with Clutch switch wiring please ? The old knackered switch has two wires Green and Green/Red which I assume connect to the same colour wires in the headlamp. The new aftermarket  switch has Black and Green/Yellow, can anyone tell me what goes to what in the headlamp please?

Thanks
regards
Steve

It doesn't matter, it's only a switch.  Just connect it to the G and G/R in the headlamp shell.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Well maybe I have a problem elsewhere. The neutral light works fine, on in neutral, off in gear. When I connect the switch the neutral light is on permanently, whether its in gear or not.

Check the diode.  It should only conduct in one direction.   If you havent got a multimeter, a battery and bulb will suffice.

Its a small rectangular black plastic thing about half an inch big. (Don't correct me on the size, I'm not going to measure it)*
It's under the LH sidepanel and it just pulls out.

Found it.. I have a couple of spares too. When the meter is switched to Diode test mode its also continuity ?
It beeps for continuity in both directions on all the diodes I have ?

I'm confused  :)

I never use the diode test function; I use the low ohm setting.  I think a battery and bulb gives a more reliable test.

Testing with a bulb and a battery, the bulb lights both ways, all the diodes I have read the same. Does that mean they're all duff ?

Correct,  they're short.  All the diode does is to allow the starter motor when in gear provided the clutch is in.  It's ok to leave it out - it's just more inconvenient.

OK Mike Thankyou, looking at DS, they're £25 and out of stock so maybe I'll leave it out.

Thanks

I've studied the circuit and ran some simulations.  If no diode is available there are two alternatives;

*  Leave the diode out
    This means it will only start when the clutch is pulled in, even when in neutral.

*  Short the diode out.
    It will work as normal except pulling the clutch in makes the neutral light come on

This is the best option
