341 repo exhaust fitting issues.
« on: May 07, 2019, 08:28:48 PM »
Sorry if this has been covered before but bear with me please  :)
I'm having a few problems making them fit and would like to ask a question regarding the left hand upper.
Can i ask if anyone has a set of 341 repo's on their 750 would they be kind enough to take a look at the left upper and see where the top seam lies.
On my original set of exhausts the seam is directly in line with the end of the footpeg bracket stud.

But on the repo one the seam is about 15mm further out from the end of the stud.

I would be interested to know if they are all like this or just mine because one issue i'm having is the side stand hitting the pipe.
Many thanks in advance
Phil

Most of my repro sets sit 4 to 8 mm  and on original oem that i have fitted they are in line to 7mm. Non of my 750's are 15mm  ;)

Are you sure that is the right side stand ?

I did thinks of that and had a look at the image on the parts list and it looks the same. Different to the k3 and k4 because it has that "loop" welded on the front
The bike is a USA k5.
Thanks

Never met a USA K5 but, just did a search on the side stand and it is correct. The UK K6 was fitted with the old type side stand. There should be a member with a K5 that could compare  ;)

Thanks trigger, the bike came with a set of oem pipes on (but with holes) and when they are fitted the stand is well clear, so i don't think that is the problem.
The new upper exhaust definately sits slightly further out and wanted to ask if it was normal for these repo's.
Cheers
Phil

My CB750 K2 is fitted with the DS pipes and the top one is much tighter into the frame than shown on your second picture.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I'd just like to explain the reason for starting the thread.
Long story short: Bought set of pipes of DSS, had a few problems with fitting.
Both left sides needing levering into place, when managed to get bolt through and tightened up balance pipes miss-aligned (a lot)and side stand hitting upper.
Right side lower fitted perfectly, upper way off, impossible to fit with lower in place.
I spoke to DSS and they offered to send me another right upper and see if it was any better, and if not satisfied send everything back for a refund...fair enough.
The replacement arrived today but unfortunately still no good as the balance pipes are fouling, preventing the upper from being fitted.
So unfortunately i'm going to be asking for a re-fund as they have no sets left.
Anyway...having 2 upper rights in my possession i made some interesting observations.

1, The headers are a completely different profile. One having a much more of a sweeping lower curve than the other.
2, The bosses that the bolt passes through sit at different heights.
3, The balance pipes are different lengths
4, There are visible spot welds on one and not on the other.
5, The seams are visibly different.
6, The drain holes are different.

There's no way these two exhausts were made with the same tooling, which would suggest there is more than one company producing them. Apologies if this is common knowledge for you lot in the know...I'm a complete newcomer to these bikes.
Be interested to hear others thoughts on the subject, especially now i'm back in the market for a set.
Where do i go now? CSMNL....Yamiya....?
Cheers
Phil

David Silver sells off the cast offs / rejects from CMSNL.
Edit....Trig has just pulled me up on this. It is Coastal Path that sells all of CMSNL's returns or rejects. Silver has nit got anyone to sell his rejects, so, if he gets anything returned, they are either sold at shows or, put back on the shelf and then sent out to the next customer who orders a set. So basically, he puts exhausts that don't fit back in to stock and keeps sending them out until someone perseveres and makes them fit.

Just had a look at my K4, your ‘side stand stop’ on the lower exhaust has not been welded in the correct place. You do however, have the correct side stand for a K5

You are not alone with this problem, here is my experience with David Silver exhausts. http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,16403.msg137927.html#msg137927
Eventually got a set from CMS, they did fit with some forcing but i am not happy with the down pipe bend.

I would never buy a set of exhausts from Silvers again as the ones for my 550 K1 where the sealing ring joins the 2 pipes together the welds made the joining pipe too short, when this was pointed out to DSS i got the runaround, i eventually made them work with a bit of ingenuity but i would look elsewhere first next time. ;D

Is this problem exclusive to DSS?  I have just bought a set of 300 pipes from DSS but they're made by Yamiya. I've bought them long before I need them, as I had the cash and fear the exchange rate going bonkers in the near future. Plans to reunite engine and frame have gone awry, so they haven't been checked yet.

I had the same problem with a set I bought for my K2 from DS, they went back and were returned with the advice they now fitted however they were still a struggle.
I was looking at the headers on the pipes last week and spotted bubbling on the chrome. Informed DS and they offered a full refund when returned, where do I now buy a set with confidence.
