Testing the charge output
« on: June 16, 2009, 11:48:48 PM »
The wires coming from the alternator are looking abit suspect, the plastic covering the wire is split and I can see bare copper on some of them.
could someone tell me how to test it to see if it's charging the battery properly?
I've bought myself a multimeter today but I'm not sure how to test it.

Thanks again
Andy

On the US site there are links to down load a genuine one, I have all the 750 "Blue Book" Dealer Manuals on a CD but cant afford to send it out for nothing.

In that is a comprehensive list of tests to perform on your charging circuit to test for faults.

Basic test is battery voltage at various revs BUT using a GOOD FULLY CHARGED battery

Remember that these dont charge at all bellow about 2,500rpm and struggle to charge with the lights on especially if you upgrade to Halogen headlamp.

No problem, its easier for you to read it from there than me to type it here!

If you dont understand or have specific questions please come back and i will do my best to help.

Also on the US site is a Honda explanation of how the charging system works which might help.

Remember that everything sold in UK was designated a K2 but had the "improvements" on the line as if it was a K3-6

The US ID book tells the same story so you do have a bit of a Frankenbike. The numberis low enough to be a 72/73 so the reg loks Ok and an engine change is also not uncommon with the age just means that it can never be classed as an "original" so the Purists get upset. I would rebuild to a decent running bike using whatever parts you feel like in whatever style and use and enjoy it
