400/4 Starter Motor Pics
« on: September 11, 2022, 03:34:52 PM »
Hi, does anyone have any photos (or schematics) of the inside of a 400/4 starter motor where the power cable bolt connects to the windings?
My through bolt is loose and turns when I tighten the nut on the outside
Starter motor works but the windings only rest against the through bolt (not soldered)
Should there be nuts both side of the casing to hold the bolt/stud securely?
Thanks!

Hi

i had the same problem with the bolt turning from the outside. Looking inside and it had detached from the coil cables. In fact the coil cables had separated. I refitted the bolt making sure it didnt touch the casing using rubber washers and a grommet. I then soldered the cable to the bolt head. So far all is good, it works a treat.

The pic show the state "before" - unfortunately i forgot to take a pic of the fixed item, i'd got it all reassembled before i realised i hadnt taken a pic - d'oh! [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Thats great, thanks very much

My cables have broken away from the bolt but still making contact

I had problems starting my bike (using the electric starter) because I believe the bad connection was draining electrical power not leaving enough to create a spark across the plugs

Always starts OK with the kickstarter

Took me a few years to work that one out!!
