That maybe so Ted but you shouldn't need to use Wellseal on a Honda, the joint faces are both large in area, flat and most joints also have locating dowels. I use Wellseal on my old Triumph engine but that’s because the joint faces are so thin (the rocker box joint is a perfect example). It looks terrible on the Honda oozing out of the joint, they could have wiped off the excess with some meths. It just highlights the standard the bike has been 'restored' to.

I believe Wellseal and Hylomar were both invented by Rolls Royce aero. RR also developed carbon fibre when they were designing the RB211 jet engine in the 70’s. They invested so much into carbon fibre technology it bankrupted the company.

I would always use Hondabond on the casings - I can understand someone old school using Wellseal elsewhere - yes they should have cleaned off the excess.
It was the Rolls Royce RB211 fan blade that they were going to make out of carbon fibre was it not - a sad end until firm relaunched as Rolls Royce  (1971) Ltd.
I remenber it well as a disgruntled staff RR member put out a rumour that the Derbyshire Building Society would go bust - that led to massive queues in Derby as members withdrew cash. The Derbshire Building Society survived the run until 2013/14 after takeover by Nationwide.

100% agree Ted. I always use Hondabond but not Wellseal, maybe he used Wellseal beause it is a lot cheaper than Hondabond (and doesn't go off in the tube despite covering the end with a piece of rubber glove :()

Maybe he used Wellseal because that's what he's had in the garage since the 1960's, probably the exact same tube 😁😁😁😁

FWIW if that is the original VRM pretty sure you cannot retain it. I think you can only retain a mark now when it's out of the DVLA for sale list or it has been retained previously.

I might be wrong but I have had instances where I could not retain or transfer an original VRM.

I have no idea if the price is a fair one.

Wasnt really bothered about the plate but it just looked about right for my level of knackeredness and the money. The seller has listed it as black and it clearly isnt but it seems ok for the brass. I'm expecting a cheque when I get home.............mmm, might be temoted at that. Whatever I get it will have to be cheap and for the money that didnt look too bad. Never going to be a show stopper but I rather liked it.

DVLA list it as gold?
Not sure if it's a trick of the poor image resolution but it looks like a sandcast - can't be at that price.

I did ask the question as I wouldnt know how to spot a sandcast and asked how to identify one but nobody came back to let me know the differences, probably couldnt be bothered.

Still quite like that though.....

It's not a Sandcast Ted, it's a total Mongrel, the buyer has been honest with his discription . A bit worrying that he calls it a 76 and a 78 though 🤣🤣🤣🤣
