Just got the artwork through from the manufacturers.

Don't forget, these are just 2D digital images, the real badges are fully embroidered so the side panel badge part will stand away from the backing twill or cloth.

This is the way it looks now. The background is this material. Just so you can get a visual of the finished badge. I thought black would be better at first but then the edge of the badge gets lost with black on black etc and I wanted a colour that wouldn't show dirt that badly.

The gold border is this thread.

The chrome lettering is done is metallic thread.

The orange F part in this thread.

And these are the final images for me to chose between.

I asked them to change the odd bits on the border, the little pinched bit on the 5 and the outline of the F to reflect what the actual badge looks like, it's surrounded by a raised chrome border. This arrived this morning.

I now have to chose which version looks the best. Hence why I'm posting. The bottom pic is closer to the actual badge but the top pic has the F part better defined.

What do you think?
First one in my opinion Ken - I'd have one of those please

Unfortunately I will have to pass on this one Ken. I still have my old bodywarmer (remember them, Barry Sheene used to wear one over his race leathers) that I used to wear to Wimbledon Speedway back in the 80’s, it is full of the metal badges I used to buy at the time including the ‘Happiness is 40-38’ classic :D
Body warmer, that's what I had for a long time. The best had a lot of Suzuki and RG500 badges on it, my steeds of the day. Alas, no pics because I lent it a GF at just the wrong time, we parted ways and I never saw it again. (the body warmer I mean! In a way I lost two body warmers!  ;D )

I would definitely buy a 400four badge in the side panel font, maybe a SOHC one as well. Great idea. 👍

I was banned from cafepress a while back for making 500 Four t-shirts using a photoshopped version of the side panel badge.

They said it was copyright Honda.

Yes it is under copy right by Honda legal department and there is a lot of parts registered with Honda. You also run the risk of being prosecuted for allowing counterfeit goods to be sold on the forum  ;)

I had a similar issue with using the registered brand name Viton. Last year, someone reported me to Ebay for selling O rings advertising them as Viton, which they are and I couldn't understand how I couldn't call them Viton, when they were. The Viton brand name is owned by Chemours in USA. I had to get my business lawyer on the case to sort the issue with both Ebay and Chemours as I was threatened with prosecution. I now have an email from Chemours stating I can use the registered trade name of their product. I also had an apology from Ebay. Lawers don't come cheap but it was worth it in the end.

As Mr Zuckerberg will tell you, currently the hosting company or app cannot be prosecuted for stuff that members may post. As long as they can prove that they have effective moderation policy and act to remove illegal content they are home and clear.

I thought brand identity was "trademark" as opposed to copyrighted?

This is interesting read too https://fabrikbrands.com/copyright-vs-trademark/ and whether the 500 Four on this badge is protected without having "Honda" also there, that may be more nuanced.

Honda seem to strenuously protect the Honda logo, which as you say Nigel is a Trademark not copyrighted. Plus my daughter has just been made a partner in a large law firm so she can always defend me  ;D ;D ;D

My badge isn't the same as the original badge, it's just a collection of letters and numbers arranged in a certain order using a similar font. It's also cloth not plastic, it's also worth noting that you cannot seem to find non genuine tank badges but there are plenty of side panels badge copies circulating and advertised on Ebay, you can also buy 500 aftermarket side panel badges sold by DS and we all know he doesn't fall foul of Hondas legal dept.

Roo I spotted this the other day when I was originally looking, not as good as mine should be and more expensive as well, plus only the F part is embroidered so when it gets washed the printing will fade over time.

You can buy a copyright from Honda under a licence  ;)

Sometimes you get people selling something unrelated, and they give you a "free" item as promotional give away.

Example, buy a surprisingly expensive bar of chocolate from Ken, and you will get a free badge of his choice thrown in  ;)
