400/4 Caliper bolts
« on: October 21, 2023, 05:49:01 PM »
Anyone know if the 2 bolts securing the calliper to the bracket are high tensile. As the brackets/calliper are cast ally, I was wondering if high tensile was required. The existing bolts are unmarked and of course, have a smaller head but this could be overcome with a socket head.

They resist all of the hydraulic pressure exerted by the brake system, without that it wouldn't be able to brake as the two halves of caliper would be pushed apart. In other words, maximum tensile loading of system.

Location in shear (trying to gonround with the disc) is relatively easy  for a bolt of that cross section.

Somehow I was thinking that the ally thread was the weaker point. So you are saying the standard Honda caliper bolts are high tensile? (8.8, 10.9....)

Actually, thinking about it, it probably depends on the depth of thread - and the bolts do go in quite a way to the retainer plate.....

Yes, to high tensile but unsure of specific rating as I don't think they are marked generally by Honda to help with information.

I’ve used stainless steel bolts in this location for many years, no problems. I have found the correct bolts with the correct sized heads at Middletons.

Think it was a 750/6 Bry, just a 500 engine with 2 cylinders added.
