CB550f speedo face wanted
« on: March 03, 2014, 05:43:53 PM »
just been passed a badly damaged CB550f speedo to repair, apparently the bike fell off a fork lift truck. Now this speedo isn't as I understand it the usual Nippon Denso one, it's a Nippon Seiki one and whilst at first glance they look the same
they are not. The body, face, internal mechanism and base are all differant. I have a base, straightend the inner and outer bodies so that's sorted. What I need is a dial face, a ND one is the same size but the holes in it that secure it to the mechanism are two close together and the apertures for the mileage counters don't line up.

To aid identification the face has Nippon Seiki Japan on the face, a side trip winder and a trip knob that can't be unscrewed. Anyone have the same type laying around in any condition?

Hi Kent,

Is this any good? It is actually for a 400, but sounds the same. Let me know if you wantt any measurements. It is a greyish green colour and does have an overlay fitted on it.

Thanks but it's the larger type as fitted to the CB750F not the smaller CB400F type. I looked on the U.S. site, a few CB550f gauges but they were all the Nippon Denso ones. Interestingly there's some dial face overlays listed for the Nippon Seiki type gauges, so if someone has gone to the trouble of producing the overlays for them there must be some around. Maybe that type were only fitted to USA models.

Hi  Kent,

Is this the type you mean?

I don't have one (sorry if I got your hopes up!) but thought the picture might help people identify it, if this is the one you're after.

Cheers,

Steph.

Hmm. I bought lots of gauges from the USA for CB250/350K0's a few years ago (only need one set must Ebay the rest!!). The guy also sold me some  250K3/K4 and CB450 (metal cover type) and CB750 gauges at the same time and  I seem to remember a 750 size gauge which was Nippon Seiki, which I found unusual for a Honda 4  and traced it to CB500/550. not 750. I can't remember if it was a Tacho or Speedo, sorry ! They are buried in my shed somewhere but I can venture in there if you wish.

Cheers... AshD

Thanks Steph 550 for posting the image, those are the ones. If you ever need tacho internals of that type I have two in my spares box.

Thanks Ashimoto K0, if you could have a look to see if it's a speedo that would be great. The image posted by Steph550 was great so maybe the Seiki type are not as uncommon as I thought. It seemed unusual to me to find the same model machine being fitted with gauges from two different manufactures

Has anyone got a trip reset knob for a 500/550?

If you can repair the faceplate it might be worth trying a decal off ebay £9
They are white background on the listing but he also does CB750 blue background. He could probably do a blue background CB550 on request?

Sorry Kent, looked in shed 1st thing and it was a MPH speedo and the correct size and Nippon Seiki but it must be from a CB750 custom like this one

Thanks for looking Ashimoto KO, not seen one like that before but I've seen ones with plastic needles. Bit of a nightmare those!

The original face has been bent back about 45 degrees and cracked into two pieces at the trip aperture. It's also distorted. I can print an overlay on vinyl  so even if the lettering on the face is wrong I can resolve that. If I can't find one I'll probable make a face from some plastic sheet I have. It's just cutting the mileage counter apertures that's going to be tricky.

I have a complete set of large 550k3 clocks somplace in the loft of the shed, not sure if they are like what you are after, may have other clocks in the shed too (well, I know there are several sets of unknown origin and more again for bikes I don't own anymore, quite possible that same clocks were fitted to numerous other bikes - I'll  take a note of what is on this thread and take a look, if something pops up as likely I'll let you know)
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

Well, found most of the clocks in the loft are Seiko - but not yet located the 550k3 ones - if you could let me know dimentions it might help as there are a few smashed clocks from which I can happily rob the faces, there are (should be if I can find them) 2 sets of k3 ones which are complete and fairly good order so breaking them up for a face might well be a bit costly - I might find a not complete set I'm hoping.

If you come across a decent working tacho I would be interested in it. Chrome bottom doesn't matter.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Set/sit. Bought/brought FFS. Bloody Americans.
