CB750 clear float bowls
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:44:43 PM »
hi all, thought you might be interested see these cb750 clear plastic float bowls i picked up on ebay a few years back. i think these fall into the '70s bike accessory category along with the petrol cap fuel gauge and clip on chrome cylinder head fin covers !. while i would agree they dont have much use as an essential riding accessory (apart from looking cool lol :), they are a priceless bit of kit for checking the float level of your carbs without the hassle of taking the carbs off. i've used them a few times to check my K6 carbs and they work perfectly, simply unclip your float bowls and clip these on and watch them fill up to the red line on the side of the bowl.
anyone know anything about them ?

Seen some glass ones of these before on a 750K in Singapore. Great little parts, and so easy.

I you google "Honda RCB" you'll probably find some pictures of something similar.

Honda produced endurance race engines for these bikes, based on CB750 SOHC bottom end but with a twin cam 16v head, they ran with CV carbs apparently for easier starting......and here's the connection......they usually had clear float bowls on the works bikes so that you can see quickly if you have any fuel problems during 24hr races.

These motors also used a gear primary drive I believe as well as the other stuff and are really a precursor to the CB900 production bikes.

Might be worth talking to Dave Silver to see if any of his many contacts would be willing to make some, it seems a few of us here would be interested in buying some!

My thought on my 750K0 and CB250K0 was to cut a hole in the side of a spare float bowl and epoxy a thin piece of glass to cover the hole for inspection of float level. Have at least a couple of spare bowls to use. On 750 would have to be careful that spring clip doesn't hit the glass though. Maybe a bit of microscope slide would be thin enough

I PM'd Frankenstuff on the US forum to see if he would be interested in making some, he hasn't got back to me.
Maybe a few others should do the same to pique his interest. He's always looking for stuff to make.

I guess the priciple is there in other fields of fuel systems, old lawn mowers and diesel building plant often had a clear filter bowl in th efuel supply line to establish easily if fuel was available and to check if any water was in there. Plastic bowls on compressed air filters are another example, so the material of some sort of resistance should be around somewhere.

3D printing springs to mind.......
