Is this what the inlet manifolds should look like?

Hi all,

And for my first question of 2015...

My 400/4 was owned by a learner and restricted to 25kw (whatever that means!) to which end an inlet device was fitted by I F International. You can see from the photos below that I have removed the offending article from each one. I would be obliged if you experts can confirm if they now look as they should or is there anything else to remove (i.e. the inner lining, say?).

yep, Drew these plates need to come out ( unless you don't have a full motorcycle licence ) I would also check the down pipes on the exhaust and i think you have already checked the carbs.

I have just looked on DSS site to see that what I have left looks OK (and there's clearly a space for a rubber insert in the engine end of the DSS pictures). I guess those engine end rubber seals(?) will need renewing.

Also, the DSS site shows them as pairs (1 & 4 and 2 & 3)... do you know how I tell the difference, as clearly I failed to realise that and to label them accordingly when dismantling? Yet more learning for if ever I attempt this rebuilding malarkey again!

Drew, You will work it out. There is two holes that go to the head and a small screw (for balance tubes) which face south (down).
Or do they face up on those? UP

Drew mine is a late model but the carb rubbers have, er, 1 2 3 4 on them. See pic.

Have you looked closely?

two rubbers should have one and 3 on and two should have 2 and 4 on the number goes at the top 1 at the top on n/s of engine 2 next to it and so on  so on

Hi all,

Finally got around to fitting these and hopefully the carbs, only to be disappointed (what's new?).

One of them broke (i.e. the rubber split in half across the middle) and so I assume they're rather old and that the rubber has hardened. There's evidence of perishing around some of their edges. I have thus bitten the bullet and ordered a set of new ones from DSS.

I'm hoping that the new ones will be pliable and allow me to push the carbs into them after fastening the rubbers to the block. Is that wishful thinking? There was no way I could put enough pressure on the old ones to do that! Difficult to warm them up in situ and I don't really want to wait for a hot day in summer to do it.

Any hints here much appreciated before next weekend's pleasure and frustration session in the man cave!

Place the rubbers in hot water for a while before you try assembly.
