CB750 / Re: Phil Read Rep - 15 Amp Main Fuse keeps blowing
« on: August 20, 2015, 09:48:09 AM »
Had this on my F1, although it only blew the fuse about once a week.

I have still got all the original electrics / fusebox etc. I cured it by cleaning all the ignition switch connectors and sprayed switch cleaner into the switch and also cleaned up all the connectors on the back of the fuse box as well as the actual fuse connectors.

Which was the problem? I think it was the fusebox as there was evidence of overheating and discolouring around the main fuse.

Been OK for well over a year now so I count it as fixed!  ;)

I got my F1 from Oxford Classic. Found him very fair and honest descriptions etc.

Think you need to start by balancing the carbs. You need a flowmeter and yes, the adjustment is on top of the carbs. If you don't have these then a local dealer should be able to help?

Just because you can hear slides clicking home doesn't mean they are ALL doing it at the same time.

« on: July 02, 2015, 10:15:57 AM »
My F1s clutch plates tend to stick together when left so initially I have to wait a bit for the clutch to stop rattling before engaging first  :) apart from that I get no drag. Not using synthetic oils.

What are your symptoms exactly?

Don't forget that as a very rough guide the main jet doesn't affect running much below 3/4 throttle the slide cutaway and needle profile / position affects running from about 1/4 up to 3/4 throttle and the idle jet below that.

As you have the idle screws 2 turns out ( ie a complete turn more than standard ) that could be why the idle is to pot. If you are running around half throttle when riding then I would be looking at the slides / needles / needle jet and needle position.

Did you replace the needles? ( are they standard? )

Can you post a pic taken a bit further away? Something doesn't look right in the top pic but I can't quite make out which way the front of the bike is. Could the fork slider be reversed or something?

Mark,

I have to agree that checking the jets is undoubtably the best and safest option, just to add a little balance tho I did not rebuild my F1 motor which had sat for 25 years. I reasoned that as it was very low mileage it had not been apart so hopefully all was well. I have done around 5,000 miles on it now with no problems. Risky? probably, lucky? definitely, but it is possible.

Just didn't want you to feel lonely as the only one who had risked it!  ;D

Agree with Bitsa, it does sound like rich mixture, what do the plugs look like?

It could be condensor(s) breaking down when hot but then I would expect it to run rough all the time when hot regardless of throttle opening. Wouldn't do any harm to replace them though particularly if they are old. If the spark is on the weak side it can sell you a dummy and make a minor carb issue much worse.

Leads me to think carburation and at the lower end of the scale what do you have the slow running screws set at?

CB750 / Re: Restored F1
« on: April 09, 2015, 09:04:29 AM »
Yes, the F1 was designed with a 4 into 1, part of the work to get back the lost horses that emissions control had lost over the years. as a result the 'Supersport' ( relative term!  ;) ) produced the same bhp as the F0. Now thats progress.

I also beleive the F1 / F2 / F3 were attempts to stretch the SOHC fours usefullness as the twin cam wasn't ready.

Personally I love the F1, ( probably rose coloured specs as I had one back in the day ) I actually like the styling but it still looks like something has fallen off the nearside. Perhaps a 4 into 2 would be better? Maybe when I retire I will experiment!

I prefer to say that 'Access to the chain for cleaning and servicing is improved' Green1!  ;D

I am old fashioned too and just use a notebook. Its more flexible as some services there is more to write than on others!
