CB500/550 / barrel removal
« on: June 12, 2012, 04:19:44 PM »
the latest problem is lifting the cylinder block off the crankcase, it lifts up to within about an inch of the top of the studs but stops as if something solid is stopping it. all nuts etc have been removed so the only thing it can be is the studs themselves but i cant see how they are holding it. Have tried tapping gently but have damaged a fin. Any ideas anyone? Mick

CB500/550 / Seat restoration
« on: May 30, 2012, 07:27:08 PM »
As i am fed up with bleeding brakes ( see other post ) I decided to restore my seat, an original honda item which i got from Steve d. I had the base powdercoated, it was very solid, and the foam was in good nick too. The seat cover i got from David Silver, it seems to be good quality and fitted pretty well but i was a little dissapointed that there was no Honda logo on the back, and the trim around the bottom is plain black where the original is chrome. If parts are to be remanufactured most enthusiasts would prefer them to be as near as possible to the original, even if this means a little more expense. Anyway it looks good, just waiting for a new strap to finish off, and might try to get some chrome trim, i think I recall another post about this?

CB500/550 / head race bearings
« on: February 26, 2012, 06:19:02 PM »
Why is it always the easy jobs that go wrong?! My 500 is fitted with taper roller headstock bearings but they are badly worn and notchy so i thought i would replace them.Problem is the lower outer race that is fitted into the frame, it is flush with the inside diameter of the frame, so i can't get anything behind to drive it out. I have tried driving a chisel into the join from the side with no success and a drill wont touch it as its so hard. Any help appreciated, thanks, Mick

CB500/550 / over priced 500 on ebay
« on: February 12, 2012, 05:26:46 PM »
Anyone seen the 500/4 on ebay, a seized up wreck with bits missing US import, now at £770 with 4 hours to go. Prices seem to vary a lot, only a few months ago i bought my 500 UK bike, taxed and tested on ebay and i only paid £890 ( although i would have paid more) I was thinking of bidding, but too expensive now!

CB500/550 / locked up 550
« on: October 15, 2011, 10:32:50 PM »
i have just fitted exhaust and carbs to the 550 i am rebuilding but when i tried to turn the engine on the kickstart
it locked up solid. bummer.it feels like a valve hitting a piston, it will turn backwards and forwards a certain amount but wont go any further. The thing is it was running ok before, and i have not stripped the engine except the outer covers. i have removed the rocker top but it still locks. all the valves seem to be closed and plugs removed so i don't think it is valve timing.Any ideas anyone?

« on: May 29, 2011, 10:45:49 PM »
to finish off my 550 k3 i needed the chrome trim for the botom edge of the tank, so i ordered the ones from silvers. These do not fit very well and are not a good match for the original. When looking around Halfords of all places i noticed some chrome look plastic trim intended for the edge of fairing screens for

CB500/550 / sluggish 550
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:22:39 PM »
hi guys, today i had a play with the k3, took the carbs off to clean out again and fit the new carb to airbox rubbers which arrived from America last week.Once they were refitted i set them with vaccum gauges, timing and valve settings etc and also fitted another twistgrip as the old one was sticking. Now for a quick roadtest before dinner. It started up first kick and sounded great, but when out on the road it seems a bit flat about 5000 rpm it dosn`t seem to want to go above that.Any ideas from you experts out there?? thanks,Mick

CB500/550 / 550 horn problem
« on: May 03, 2011, 08:45:38 PM »
Hi guys, well the 550 k3 rebuild is almost there, i booked an mot for thursday, only the horn is not working.Neither did 2 spares,so off i went and purchased a new one, result, still no horn.I checked the horn was getting power from the black wire, it is,and if you earth the other terminal it beeps,so must be switch, but this is brand new.All connections are good so i stripped the switch and i can not work out how the horn terminal goes to earth when you press the button as it is encased in a plastic block ( it is the type that has a PA headlamp flash combined with the horn button) Any ideas anyone??
