CB500/550 / rims and spokes
« on: January 19, 2011, 02:32:53 PM »
Hi,

As I need to replace worn tyres I'm considering replacing the scabby (flaking chrome and surface rust) rims and tidying the hubs while I'm on. I've never laced a wheel but there are plenty of guides online.

I've shopped around and found RoyalSpares on ebay who have quoted the following prices:

The price of 19" wheel is GBP 29.99 and Mild steel is GBP 26.99
The price of 18" wheel in Mild Steel is GBP 36.00

They are allot cheaper than I've seen elsewhere, but I haven't yet convinced myself if that's a good thing or not! Has anyone ever hared of a cheap rim failing?
Stainless appeals, but they only do it in 19"

Also does anyone have specs for both the front and rear spokes? (length, thickness, head angles etc.)

Cheers

Misc / Open / Hondamatic UK groups/forums
« on: September 28, 2010, 11:15:41 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone know of any UK groups/clubs/forums for the Hondamatic, specifically the CB400AT ?

My dads just bought one that's on the road and it came with 90% of another in boxes that I'm thinking of building into a bobber.

CB500/550 / Brake caliper
« on: July 11, 2010, 06:36:07 PM »
Hi,

The Haynes manual says that it should be possible to push the piston back in easily by hand, is this correct?
I can't budge mine by hand, but I'm more used to working on cars and generally having to use a bit of force/leverage to push the pistons back so this seems normal to me.
I've also found cracks in the hose so it'll have to be replaced.

CB500/550 / Fuse ratings - continuous OR blow ?
« on: March 18, 2010, 07:52:56 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know if the fuse ratings are for continuous or to blow ? The spares I have are labeled for both e.g. 8A continuous 15A blow, 17A cont 35A blow etc.
I've discovered that all of my fuses are the wrong ratings including a household 13A where there should be a 7A.

CB500/550 / Security
« on: March 12, 2010, 01:06:47 PM »
Hi,

Can anyone recommend a disk lock that will fit a 550, or any other easy to carry on the bike security device?
On my other bikes I use a Xena disk lock alarm but it doesn't even come close to fitting. I've got the garage sorted with ground anchors, alarms, extra door bolts etc, this is just for parking at work.

I'm in the process of cleaning out the powdercoat from the steering lock but since the seat lock has been forced I'm not confident that the key I have will fit. I also have a tilt switch to make a DIY alarm, and yes I'm a bit paranoid.

Hi,

Having a bit of an MOT disaster today - It started bogging at around 3,500rpm on route and wouldn't go any higher unless I was very gentle on the throttle then refused to pass 4,500rpm. When I stopped outside it was holding revs, I turned it off while some space was cleared, it then started but ran really flat and wouldn't pull up the hill, stalled and wouldn't restart.
I'm thinking that it possibly overheated, but not sure if the cause is ignition or fuel related (vacuum leak maybe), or it could even be oil flow as I'm yet to trace why the oil pressure light doesn't work.

They're going to leave it to cool for a couple of hours before trying to start it for an MOT and I'm arranging a van to take it home  :(

Any tips would be great, I've got a strobe so the ignition should be easy to test.

CB500/550 / high idle and emissions bits missing
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:41:40 PM »
Hi,

I'm working my way through what is more or less an extended service to get a 550 back on the road after 7 years of being stood in the back of someones garage, it's going fairly well but there's a couple of things I can't get my head around.

The bike now starts quite easily but takes a little coaxing to keep it running until it's warmed up. Once warmed up and ticking over at 1,000rpm if you blip the throttle it ticks over at 3,000. It you then put a bit of pressure on the grip a little in the closed direction there is no movement but it will drop back to 1,000rpm. Everything feels free, there resistance from the spring feels even throughout the range of the throttle.

There is a missing pipe from the airbox between the carbs and the airfilter housing and there is nothing below the airfilter in it's housing. I believe there should be a breather system and oil separator. As this is before the carbs I can't see how this could affect the idle but it's the only parts that stand out as missing.

The carbs have been blasted through with carb cleaner and don't appear to have any blockages. The rubber boots are hard but have no cracks, given the amount of force it took to push the carbs back into them I think/hope that they will be sealing. I don't think I'll be able to get good results from the usual spray something flammable in the area and listen for idle change vacuum leak test due to the nearby openings into the airbox from the missing breather system.

Any ideas?

CB500/550 / Spark plug socket

Hi,

Can anyone tell me where I can find a spark plug socket that will fit the middle two plugs?

I've just been reminded how much I hate messing about with points, the scimitar was bad enough till I went electronic but 2 little fiddly sets is even worse.

New Member Introductions / New Member - CB 550

Hi,

I've just bought a CB550K and found this forum.
I don't really know much about these bikes yet, mines been off the road for the last 7 years but appears to be fairly complete and original, it could do with some general tidying but it looks like it may go straight through a MOT. It starts and funs fine but feels very flat, I'm in the process of downloading a workshop manual so I can check it over properly.

This is my first big bike having ridden a Chinese copy of a Z50 for the last 4 or 5 years. The z50 is quite heavily modified with 125 engine in it for a start, but I currently intend to keep the 550 fairly standard.
I've also got a CF70 that I'm sorting out for my girlfriend, it's lowered with proper front forks, 110 engine and fat rims.

Cheers

Allan
