Using the original Honda style 500 grease nipples?
« on: August 29, 2024, 01:50:02 PM »
I need to squeeze some grease into my swing arm shaft using the original style nipples.
Yes, had I thought it through I would have tapped out a thread and fitted the modern type.

Is there a specific end I can fit to my Sealy Grease gun that will work on this old presumably Japanese design or is it a case of holding the gun against the nipple and keep on pumping until I see grease appear somewhere?

I don’t know of this helps Ted but I bought anew grease nipple for my 550 K2 from Julie, screwed it into the swinging arm using the original thread and used my new bought from Halfords grease gun. All seemed to fit and work ok

These are the nipples at the ends of the  swing arm shaft - there are no threads they are the original press fit type so they do not lock onto my grease gun.

Ted, if you push the gun tight into the nipple whilst pumping it you should eventualy see grease appear from the ends of the swingarm mate

I hope it will i'll persevere - so far grease has only escaped round the external edges instead - tbh it's not an expensive grease gun just a small Sealy one that uses a cartidge system so not a great volume but good pressure.

If I can't get it to work it might be a case of tapping out the right thread and fitting the screw type.

Bryan, do you happen to know what size Tap I need to fit the modern type screw in nipple?

I bought M6 threaded nipples, so drilled and tapped to M6.
Worked perfectly.

I just buy M6 grease nipples then drill and tap M6x1 mate. Which is the most common M6.

Interesting thread (pun intended), as this is a job I will have to do soon, handy to know the original nipples are just a push fit.

Yes BUT  do not hit them on the end to fit, only hit on the shoulder with a correct sized tube. NOTE an 8mm deep socket WILL damage the end, tee shirt and video for that one

Thanks, but what I mean was that I am going to take out the original nipples and replace with normal ones so I can just use a standard grease gun.
