Condenser replacement
« on: February 10, 2025, 10:29:28 AM »
Bit of advice, please.
I'm ordering a new set  of points for my 400 and was thinking to replace the condensers at the same time.
Is it usual to replace them as well as the points, or do they either "work or not work"?
What grease do you guys use to lubricate the points cam - I have some lithium grease if that is good to use?
Thanks

Good practice to replace condensers when replacing points, after all they are there to protect the points from burning, especially if you have pitting or signs of burning on your points. As for cam lube, a couple of drops of light oil on the felt to keep them in order. That’s assuming you have the felt that comes in contact with the cam.

Thanks for the advice.
I don't think the replacement points will have the felt pad, but will check when they arrive.
Thanks

The felt pad is on the points plate not the points themselves. On the right hand lower side, just below the advancer cam and hiding under the big nut. Few drops of light oil on there stops the points heel from wearing out thus affecting the timing. If by points cam you meant the advancer itself, as in between the advancer pillar and the cam which goes around it, then a light grease is fine in that situation. You'd need to dismantle the advancer unit to do that though. Easy but you may not want to go that far. If worried, let a few drop of light oil, like 3 in 1, seep between the cam and the cam tower.

Expect regular adjustments and timing checks unless you got the genuine Honda points.
Some of the aftermarket ones have soft heels and contacts not properly hardened.

I ended up re-fitting the original ones after binning the aftermarket junk.

Good luck

It has been reported on the us site that a lot of aftermarket condensors fail quickly and if you want genuine Honda points plus condensors it is cheaper to buy the complete plate assembly BUT  sit down before you check price

I got some condensers from Andy Cepok in Austria, he listed them as genuine Honda but were not in genuine Honda blister packs, they look ok though. Not had a chance to test them yet and I still have a couple of genuine condensers so which ones I'll use is open to debate. I still have loads of old condensers from old points plates, I may test those to see if they are still working. As it turns out I don't need to fit condensers with the Hondaman system on my engine, we'll see.

Actually is he located in Germany (D-67551 Worms-Heppenheim)  ;)
But I too purchase a lot of stuff at his eBay store and so far he sells decent quality, mostly OEM...

Germany---Austria, Essentially the same, same people, same language. I do know he's a robbing sod, sold me a NOS seat and robbed all the cushion rubbers and everything else he could, when I complained they were part of the seat and should have come with it he offered to sell me them separately, I refused to give him any more of my money and bought them from DS.

Which just enforces my above objection...

As a former Austrian National born in Klagenfurt I have to agree with ST1100, not the same people, culture or Country.
The Austria-Hungarian Empire was second only to Russia in size, it did not include Germany that shares a language with common origins but not the same, much like callig Americans the same as the British imho.
