Hi Everyone
« on: July 29, 2026, 06:55:58 PM »
Hi, I am a newbie to the group. I am retired and live in mid-Wales though that's a fairly recent move from my Essex homeland, basically following children and grandchildren. Having just purchased my first classic bike, a 1976 CB250 G5, I already have several questions as, whilst it appears sound underneath, it has several non-standard parts and understanding where these are from and what should be on it is a proving a bit difficult. I would like to get it back to a more standard look. Anyone with knowledge of the G5 would be a great help to me. I also have a RE Interceptor which I have played with a little but really wanted to delve a bit deeper into spannering, hence, the CB. Cheers

Welcome to the happy band

I don't have any experience with the 250

But have a look in the archives

Could have a manual for it

Welcome to this very helpful and friendly bunch. Your story about following/chasing kids is fairly typical of the "retired generation".

Always a good start to post a photo or two of your new toy, everyone loves a photo. There will be many with much knowledge to help and guide you.

Cheers

Welcome to the sohc Community, might be worth using the search facility for your particular model, there appears to be a lot of posts for 250 models.

Welcome!  Guaranteed everyone on here will help you where they can, I've never had so much help on a forum.

Where in mid Wales? I live and grew up on the mid Wales border, never left in fact.

PDI'd, serviced, rode and sold more than i care to remember G5 back when current, they were one of the learner bikes before the 125 restrictions came in.
Go to cmsnl for an online parts book, register with them(its free) then when you look at a part it will tell you what other bikes the part fits.

They were known for cam chain adjuster failure, oil feed to cam failing if not serviced right and shattering piston rings if thrashed from cold.

When you have enough posts up you will be able to put up pictures for comments

Thanks to all for the welcome and advice. I am in Llandrindod. Here's a a pic of the yellow peril - which obviously shouldn't be yellow and which doesn't look like a G5 :) the bits I think are not G5 are a good condition seat (350?) which doesn't fit, the exhausts, the rear shocks, the rear mudguard, rear light and handlebars. Most bits seem to be  period correct. The tank I am undecided on as it looks the right shape but is smooth and doesn't have any badge fixings as these are stuck on. Any advice on these would be great  :)

Can't help with the bike,
But love your location

The Hotel Metropole once hosted the ISDT in the mid 60's ,

Steve Mcqueen rode for the USA team,

Crossgates is a major meeting place,

The road north to Newtown is one of the best roads ever to ride
