400/4 swing arm bushes
« on: November 08, 2014, 09:37:33 AM »
Hi Experts.
I'm about to try and get the swinging arm bushes out, they look like brass and I'm replacing them with new brass one's. I'm sure I read on here somewhere the best way to get the old one's out is to cut them with a hacksaw. Before I start is there anything I need to be careful of or look out for?.

Not really, just use a hacksaw blade to SLOWLY work your way through it, try and keep the blade level and avoid cutting into the swingarm itself. Once you are through, put a punch or lod screwdriver on the outside of the old bush near the cut, and tap it toward the centre, collapsing the bush inwards , when it should just pull out easily. Don't forget to soak your new bushes overnight in oil before fitting, as phosphor bronze is porous and pre lubricates them, so they will last longer:))

Julie, are you sure it is a bush problem. It is very rare to have a problem once brass bushes are fitted.

No, I'm not sure if there was really a problem with them Trig. There may have been the slightest bit of play when I wiggled the back wheel, but it also may have been my imagination !!!. Also though, the back end feels very slightly unstable and a bit skippy and wobbly when riding. It may be because i'm comparing the back end with my CBR's. Anyway, as I'm going to change the chain and sprocket it just made sense to me to to take the whole back end apart and do the bushes at the same time. Just got them out, no major problems removing them, except 1 broken nail and some chipped nail varnish.   ;D ;D

Julie,
You can not compare a CBR against a CB400. Worlds apart mate.
A bit skippy can be shocks and wobbly could be down to low pressure in the rear tyre.

.

Worlds apart I know Trig and as you know I have got a poss slow puncture on back tyre. But with my limited knowledge (compared to you Guys) I just go with what I can do and hope for the best, and it's better than doing the ironing or housework !!!). Hagon shocks fitted, both look ok.

Play at the back wheel on mine turned out to be due to the RH wheel bearing being a bit of a sloppy fit in the  hub.... I suspected that the nearly new Honda plastic? swingarm bushes were to blame but they seem ok if the swingarm is pulled about with the wheel removed.

Hub wear is common with these old alloy hubs after a few bearing changes.

I need to measure the clearance to check it's not too much then lock it in with a bearing retaining liquid.

Never understood why they fitted plastic bushes in the first place, what is wrong with tapered bearings like they use on the Dresda swinging arms.

From an engineering viewpoint, taper rolers are less than ideal in that application, they work best in full rotation such as car wheel bearings etc. Even in steering head bearings they are compromised, but far easier to deal with than loose balls>:D

Thought the original bushes were plastic.
You probably have the HONDA shop manual already  Julie .... but just in case or for others I bunged in into Dropbox here below:-
Got my knuckles wrapped last night by Bitsa for mentioning rubber tubes again .. so sorry for that  :-[

Thanks Ash. Im sure the original were plastic but sometime in the past the bike has been completley stripped as the frame has been powder coated. I assume the brass one's were put in as part of the rebuild, I only changed them again because I have the back end out to do the chain and sprocket.
