We did have a member here a while back who accidentally left his fuel tap on - the petrol drained into the sump iirc causing damage when he tried to start it.

I assume the petrol went into the inlet manifold via an open valve into the cylinder head / piston area - drained into the engine. Are you sure your fuel tap is closing fully?

Forgot about the tank system - just trying to ascertain if the oil levels were checked in identical circumstances. If I do an oil change I fill it close to level, fire it up to ensure filter is full of oil then check it again & top up if needed.

Max made my SS wheel & engine spacers on my 500  plus the brake hub stay fitting. Very pleased with the quality.

I've no idea but interesting front axle clamp arrangement.

Are you comparing the change of oil levels whilst on the center stand on level ground on a cold engine?

Breather pipe might just be doing it's job venting off from a warm engine?

I would not panic just yet.

You may have a problem getting that plated brake pivot through the frame mount

I could not get my spare brake pivot (came with the return spring) to fit into the frame on my 500 with just a tickle of spray paint on it to stop corrosion!

I have a decent set of four original  emulsion tubes - PM me if you are interested (not asking daft money).
I replaced mine together with the floats for no good reason when I refurbished the carbs in 2020.

Out of interest on your electronic ignition can you check the timing for 1-4 & 2-3 as I see no sensors that are adjustable for each pair of cylinders?

That's interesting - not a part I recognise from dismantling my engine - certainly not attached inside my outer casing though it might be elsewhere in a box?

Seen it in the parts book picture for the 500 looks like for the 1975 models onwards on some listings?

Enjoyed the movie never seen so much fuel leaking from carbs before. Hope it's sorted for good now.

I might just have been lucky with my 400 carbs - only time they have ever leaked is when I ran out of fuel on a journey - I came to a stop - switched on the reserve and petrol poured out of one carb in particular - I just shook the bike from side to side & it stopped pretty much instantly. I suspect the float /valve  had stuck down due to the acute angle.

Possibly, I wonder whether a watercooled fireblade engine might get more even heat distribution, to cure the paint. That might be fine for the front of the engine by the exhausts, but it is cooler around the starter/ gearbox area and that is where the VHT hasn't stayed put, on mine.

BiL just left it for 3 months to self cure at shed temperature.

Once all the solvent has evaporated it is cured - baking or similar just speeds up the process he claims.

Fork ears will be rotted out inside, fork sliders will need hard chroming.
If it does not turn over who knows what the inside of the engine/gearbox  might be like .
The advert saying he does not have time does not sit right somehow given that it was his fathers - at least that's how the listing reads..
My thinking is it is better to buy one that already had some tender loving care /dosh spent on it that's cosmetically sound just needs fettling to taste.

Simons 500 is testimony to buying something already pretty good when he bought it that he is improving with his ownership.
