Misc / Open / Bangers & Cash S3 Ep7 Honda S800 Coupe
« on: May 13, 2022, 07:35:40 PM »
I love this series tonight I watched the above episode showing the Honda S800 Coupe.

Back in 1966/7/8 I worked part time in the motor trade. I twice got to collect  Honda S800 Coupes and one  convertable from the Chesterfield Dealer outlet (a branch of Brocklehurst Motors) and drive them to Derby on trade plates - no A38 back then just lovely winding A & B roads. At 6ft 1in they were bit compact but wow did they rev & go!

When I did my dynamic timing a few days ago I did it for 1/4 initially so today I spent over an hour trying to get the timing marks for 2/3 spot on at the same time.
A long winded process as one of the modules was close to it's limit on the clamp screws so undeterred persevered by way of moving the 1/4 module on the back plate then re-timing to 1/4 then again for 2/3 - repeat until you start to forget when it's too advanced / too retarded.

Conscious of not spending too much time with the engine running & not cooling with movement  I made most of the adjustments on a stop start basis. I have it pretty darn close for today - I will check it again tomorrow when I can stand up straight again. It was towards the end of the process that I sat in a chair with the bike lift raised to it's highest position.

It's not an issue when you rev the engine but at idle speed there does seem to be quite a bit more backfiring from the exhuast system than I would like- it's a Motad system what is the most likely cause please?
My carbs have not flooded with no petrol smell evident - engine idles at 1200 rpm whilst checking the timing in the F position.

Misc / Open / Lessons learnt from my 400 rebuild.
« on: April 30, 2022, 09:37:10 AM »
1.You can never take too many photos during dismantling but not everything might have been correct when you started.
2.Keeping a daily log of work done can help with motivation if your enthusiasm wains.
3. Just as important as photos when dismantling are photos during assembly especially of the parts that are hidden after assembly.
4.Take your time during assembly making sure you check and check again.
5.Don't be afraid to ask questions even if you have to wait a day or two for an answer.
6.A clean work area is a must - dog hairs were my problem.
7.The only person you need to please is you - it's your build.
8.When you complete your first build there will always be something you wish you had done better or differently.
That's the learning curve in action don't let it get to you.

CB350/400 / Cam chain tensioner question?
« on: April 29, 2022, 02:41:16 PM »
It's pretty cold here so I have set the Dynamic Iginition Timing - it starts much easier plus nipping up the manifold bolts has stopped the exhuast popping & banging - nice steady idle at 1200 rpm when warm.

At present the cam chain tensioner bolt is in just nipped up position from when I first released it after fitting the top of the engine.

There is no chain clatter do I need to do the adjustment as per my manual with the engine running at 1200 rpm?
Only asking as it looks like a recipe for new burn marks!
Could it be overtensioned if I do not now adjust it at 1200 rpm?

CB350/400 / 400 fuel pipe fitting does it need a clip at the carb end?
« on: April 26, 2022, 06:27:59 PM »
To cut a long story short I have had to do some re-routing of my fuel pipe from carbs to the tank as I was not happy with the in-line fuel filter arrangement.

My new pipe is a larger o/d with the right i/d it was a tight fit in between the carbs but I somehow managed to fit it after some fiddling to get it over the bulge part & fully down.
I can't get any sort of clip in place at the moment. (I did this with the air box etc still in place working from the top with the petrol tank removed.

Is it essential to fit a clip of some sort or is there a trick method of securing it if necessary?

Misc / Open / Finding some footwear any pointers.

In my youth I just used some Tuff Boots when biking as proper gear was out of my budget.

I am wondering what type of boot to wear when riding my 400/4 I don't want Yeti sized boots something reasonably supple but I have two provisos.

1) My feet are Size 11 Extra Wide fitting shoes.

2) I have an issue with most synthetic linings so need leather or possible a breathable Gortex type interior.

I used to use my old Police Issue Technics all leather boots that had leather interiors but like a fool gave my last pair away!
Buying on the internet is not really an option so need to look for Brands stocked locally.

Advice sought please.

I need to get some chain lubricant on my new DS Chain & Gears - I was given an almost full can of IZUMI Professional Chain & gear lubricant - I have never heard of it until today.

Is it worth using or is it old technology?

Misc / Open / Crash Hat options & advice/opnions sought.

Now that my lovely British Made Everoak skid lid is in the bin I need to sort out a new one. I suspect that the degredation of my helmet interior might be linked to the contamination from our house fire back in 2017 - quite a few other items have since either failed or gone yellow afterwards.

When I bought my helmet the market place was Polycarbonate, Composite &  Carbon Fibre - I do not tollerate most man made fibres in direct contact with my skin so went for leather interior.
I do not use a Satnavn, phone, or radio but do now have to wear spectacles. I got used to the full face visor but for the speeds I will ride at probably not a must.

Experiences & suggestions welcome please - I plan to go shopping on Saturday as I need to try before I buy.

Misc / Open / My first ride on the 400/4 more like an Ealing Comedy!
« on: April 20, 2022, 11:31:42 AM »
So this morning with the battery fully charged decided I would give my bike it's first run around the housing estate behind us.
Firstly I need to make some excuses before I set the scene - the sun is out but it's a chilly morning I manoeuver the bike out of the garage I have found my crash helmet in the bedroom wardrobe right at the back - the last time I rode a bike was on the 19th July 2009 when I parted with my XJ900F. I am now 73 yrs 11 months old.

I get my full face crash helmet and do my best to get it over my head I am met with three obstacles, firstly one of my hearing aids falls off and I can't get it over my spectacles that I did not need in 2009 except for reading. Both hearing aids removed with specs, helmet on then I realise I have forgotten how to fasten the strap throught the two loops.

Helmet removed - test run on fastening the straps - helmet on - still can't fasten the chin strap - into house with the aid of a mirror, helmet is now secured - visor up, feed my specs into the helmet now I can see the driveway ahead. Into first gear I ride off with a bit of a learners low speed wobble - can't find second gear or neutral again. Complete my maiden voyage in 1 st gear and back home.

Lack of gears is due to the rear link striking the rear footrest pivot pin - easy enough fix - no problem - no idea why I did not notice that when I replaced the shift lever.
Safely navigate into the garage and dismount from the bike that is on the centre stand again back on the ramp.

As I stride towards the house well not so much a "stride of pride" more of a hobble as both my hips now ache from the cold plus the stress of keeping balance at a steady 10 mph in first gear for a staggering 5 tenths of a mile. Odd thing is I feel strangely elated and youthful provided I do not try to walk for at least 20 minutes whilst the adrenaline wears off.

Despite this iffy virgin ride I am still high on the experience - plus the brakes actually work!

CB350/400 / Is there an easy way to test for charging ?
« on: April 19, 2022, 05:14:57 PM »
Now that I have the bike running I need to be sure that the battery is being charged by the alternator before I take her any distance for a run. I guess the ignition light going out is pretty meaningless on a bike.

Is there an easy way to test if charge is going into the battery without too much complicated stuff - the charging system is a standard original wiring layout with the original silicone recifier & pointless regulator I think its called?

Neither unit has been replaced by me.

I was looking at the above part described as a "Heat Shield" for the fuel pipe - it got me thinking as to how it worked - being steel would it not attract the heat due to it's conductivity?
Mine is missing it got me thinking was this originally designed for the old clear plastic type fuel pipe to stop it going out of shape?
Is there a SS alternative on the market that anyone has used?
