Ahh yes the retaining screw for the bar, not yet managed to find the brass ones but I supplied Phil (Sesman) with a stainless one instead. I have a few sizes of them, what thread size would you like and I'll alter one to fit, I fit it in a drill and file the stub done until it fits the slot in the bar, they are too big as standard.

Still wondering why you didn’t just buy a plastic right angled pipe connector Roo, you could just sand the end until it fitted the body, no one will ever see it with the pipe on.

Always wondered why Honda failed to fit spring washers under the heads of the choke flap screws, if one of those come loose it’s going straight into the combustion chamber. Ok, so they peened the back of the screws a little when new but I’m willing to bet nobody does that when they get refitted, another thing, Mark Paris recommends cutting down any protruding part of the carb balancing adapter screws on the intake manifolds so that they don’t upset the airflow, so presumably the same thing could apply to the choke flaps screws, so I intend to replace the screws with stainless ones, fit a spring washer then file them flat on the reverse, whilst not mounted of course so that no chance of metal filings going into the carb bodies. Maybe I’m just going ott but then again maybe it will make a very small difference.

Oh and Roo, Mark also says approx 5 psi in the forks and I think it was approx 10mm of preload. I’ll check that when I can find his notes on the 500.

I'll see how my spare cases look Mick, might be a day or so as it's raining hard here and the shed has not much of a roof left.

Why do I feel victimized here?

I'm going to experiment with plating all my carbs bit in yellow passivate instead of bright, as I've got 2 sets I can do one of each and see which I prefer. As the carb bodies are black yellow might be a better contrast. I'm also going to see how leaving them in the passivate longer affects the colour, I might even have a mix of yellow/gold and silver plated bits or I may even do a couple of pieces black just to see how they come out.

Is that just zinc or zinc/nickel Roo?

Most likely the dowels are welded into the cases, you could try a little heat in those areas, whilst you hit the cases with a dead blow hammer.

I'd just buy a second hand swinging arm Mick, I'd never trust welding in that area unless the metal was brand new, the problem is you cannot see the inside of the arm which could be rusting through.

I have loads of spares for the 500 Mick, let me know if you need anything and if I have you can either have it FOC (just postage) or for a small fee if it's rare.

I have at least 2 sets of crankcases, I was going to throw them soon as the shed is coming down early next year and I'll be binning a ton of stuff, most rusty etc so probably no good but the scrapman was very interested and offered to clean the shed out for me. I threw a stack of A/F spanners/sockets out, they just get in my way.

Yes, it’s from America, though originally from Japan  ;). They all are……

I couldn’t and wouldn’t vouch for mileage on mine, but it came with 17k on the clocks and judging by the state of instruments, carburettors, engine bolts, running gear and engine internals is more than probably genuine. The cams bearings, chains and guides were less than 30% worn. Even the primary drive rubber elasticity was comparable with new. The mains, big ends and barrels were well within factory tolerance and all bearings unmarked. I guess I got lucky, very lucky. I still replaced them all. The engine is effectively brand new….still got to start it though.

Mine was evidentially stored in a garage by a Mr Delbert D Trotter of de Kalb. Illinois since 1982. Remarkably the bike is mentioned in his obituary. The bike came to market as part of his estate clearance. I even have the Deed of Title of that date. He bought it, used it for travel to work for a short time, fell off then stored it.

Still needed of a lot of work to get it to this stage. Just received all the chrome back for refitting…..lovely.

This one might not be the best one out there, but I bet its close. Not that’s it’s particularly important.

Prestige Phil?

I'm tempted to bid on that, just for the challenge.

All depends on how bad the frame is.

Sent them a question to see if they do any for the 500/550, thanks.

Let me know if they do Ken ;)

Finally got the answer Roo, after sending dimensions and pictures they send me a link to one which will fit. However it was just a preload type and I wanted one with an air valve as well. So I told them that and they have offered to make me a pair but it will be 30 days, if you want a pair let me know and I'll ask them to make 2 pairs. Price is £45 for the air valve type or £34 I think for just the preload type. Need an answer as soon as you can please.

OR, you can thread the end of the swinging arm bolt and fit the threaded later type.

It's just a bare shell now Ted. Got it free off EBay, seller claimed it was NOS so I bought it for £15, when it arrived it was seized solid and was clearly second hand, complained and he refunded the money and said to keep it. Thought I'd see how it worked and took it apart, sanded all the casting marks etc off it and it came up ok. The internals freed off once they were apart, the grease was like rock. I have the original one off my bike, so i'll do the same to that as well and then flog one I think. Could polish it but there's a lot already polished on the bike, including the outer rims of my Lester mags and the fork sliders.

The 500 has push fit grease nipples on the shaft, not sure if the 350 is the same, bitch to get a new one in without damaging either the outer surface or the ball bearing.
