CB350/400 / Petcock size on new tank?
« on: April 07, 2021, 11:38:34 AM »
Well after sterling service for 40 odd years my F2 tank started leaking so I've bit the bullet and bought a new one from DS. The description on their site says that the tank requires the USA type F2 petcock, otherwise order part number  16950KCPJ01 (£62.40 inc VAT).

I assumed that this is the 20mm tap, great! the old one should fit but no. The new tank has arrived with the threads on the tank measuring approx 14mm I thought that Honda petcocks were all either 16mm or 20mm. Plenty of replacement 16mm petcocks around on ebay and there are some 14mm around £20 is this what people are using ? Anyone had the same problem ?

Thanks
Steve

CB350/400 / Charging circuit test
« on: June 15, 2018, 11:25:23 AM »
Hi,
Have had a problem with my 400/4 regarding charging. It seems to be charging OK during normal riding, starts first time on the button even after leaving it for 1/2 weeks but if I ride with headlights on for say 10/15 miles it discharges the battery and next time I try to start with the button, the battery won't turn the starter but it will kick first time.  I've just fitted a new fully charged battery and I've connected a multimeter across the battery when running at 3/4000 rpm and I'm getting 12.02.  I've cleaned the points on the voltage regulator, swapped it with another 2 regulators but I can seem to get a higher reading.  I suspect the alternator is not working correctly, any further tests to prove this ?

Thanks

CB350/400 / Clutch Switch wiring
« on: May 04, 2017, 04:36:33 PM »
Can anyone help me with Clutch switch wiring please ? The old knackered switch has two wires Green and Green/Red which I assume connect to the same colour wires in the headlamp. The new aftermarket  switch has Black and Green/Yellow, can anyone tell me what goes to what in the headlamp please?

Thanks

CB350/400 / Chrome clip on wiring harness ?
« on: February 20, 2017, 10:12:31 AM »
Hi Chaps,
I'm having a few problems finishing the wiring around the headlamp on 400/4. Despite trawling the net I've been unable to find a good picture of the area around the front stop switch. I'm trying to work out the orientation of the chrome clip that holds the wiring harness, and if fact which part of the harness its meant to support, would anyone have a couple of pictures of that area please ? I think the clip bolts to the same bracket as the stop switch ?

Many thanks

CB350/400 / Goodridge hose fitting
« on: July 22, 2016, 04:37:17 PM »
Hi,
I've just fitted a goodridge hose kit and connected to the front caliper, the kit contains parts to fit the hose direct into the caliper without the standard fixed brake line. Has anyone else done this? The angle from the caliper sends the hose almost directly into the front wheel and just can't be right. Any thoughts ?

CB350/400 / Tensioner slipper
« on: June 15, 2016, 07:29:38 PM »
Hi Chaps, bit advice needed here, CB400F.
Fitting a new camchain and tensioner slipper while the engine is apart but the slipper seems very tight, its about a half inch above the head surface and it needs to be heavily compressed to get the holder bolts in. I'm wondering if theres something wrong. I'm pretty sure its located in the horseshoe correctly.

Thanks

CB350/400 / Engine Seals and gaskets
« on: April 26, 2016, 11:04:44 AM »
Its now engine rebuild time!
I've had a rebore with new pistons, new camchain and primary chain, new big and shells, tensioner blade etc. and I've freed off the tensioner horseshoe, all threads are good on the adjuster bolt. I'm rebuilding the oil pump now. Everything has been cleaned and blown out with an airline. I'm gathering everything for my engine rebuild and after trawling through these pages I've decided to buy a genuine Head gasket from DSS. Has anyone info on the best gaskets, and a genuine seal kit please, and a supplier ?

Any other pearls of wisdom before I tackle the job  ?
Anyone local who can check the bottom end before I bolt it all together ?

Thanks

CB350/400 / Piston ring end gap
« on: April 19, 2016, 11:44:04 AM »
Can anyone enlighten me as to the end gaps for each of the three piston rings in the bore please ?
Its a new rebore +.5, new pistons and rings. I've looked at the top ring in the bore and it looks to be about 9thou, how does that sound ?
I'd assume the gap should be the same for the second ring, I think the oil control ring should be a little bigger ?

Thanks

CB350/400 / Forks Rechrome
« on: December 04, 2015, 09:37:14 AM »
Just had my forks returned from Brookes suspension after re chroming. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed with the finish, they're certainly much better but the chrome finish looks more like a brushed aluminum than chrome, they're not shiny at all. In fact the lowers that I've polished look better. Has anyone else had theirs rechromed, what sort of finish would you expect ?

The centre one is an old one for comparison.

CB350/400 / Oversize Pistons 0.50mm
« on: September 22, 2015, 05:52:17 PM »
Hi Chaps,
I've just bought a used engine today and taken the barrels to S.E.P in Kegworth for assessment.  The verdict ?
I need a rebore "See what you pistons and rings you can get, preferably 0.50, but 0.25 would do".

I see David Silver do oversize piston sets at £48ish. Before I go down that road I just thought I'd ask, does anyone have a set they're willing to part with ?

Thanks

CB350/400 / Re-liner, Rebore
« on: September 02, 2015, 02:19:08 PM »
Hi all,
I've made some progress with the 400 project and I've managed to get the head and barrels off. The head had suffered some damage in the past (remains of a broken ring maybe) but I think I've managed to salvage that OK. Unfortunately I think that the barrels are going to need new liners or a rebore and I'm looking for an engine reconditioner in the North East who can do it. I've used Cleasby in Durham many, many moons ago for car engines but I'm looking for recommendations from anyone. Unless of course someone on the forum has suitable replacements for sale ?

I'm also having trouble removing the fork tubes from the stanchions, I've undone the bolt in the bottom of the leg but I cant remove it, its just turning and the tubes just aint moving anywhere, any pointers please ?

Thanks
Steve
