Good result Ted, testament to your persistence, enquiring outlook and time given to complete.

My complements of your documentation of it here too, makes for interesting forum contribution with in depth look at many facets in going through this build.

Well after having the 500 running a few times firing on all four cylinders it did not want to start yesterday when I was going to set the dynamic timing. Within seconds of trying to start her up petrol started to leak from number 1 carb overflow.

A quick investigation revealed that the petrol pipe on my temporary tank was weeping (just pushed on) it  seemed to be soft and sticky on the outside after the inline filter and inline tap. I drained the temporary tank and removed the piping that it came with - all horible and shedding little black bits into the carbs for sure.

I binned all the 'free piping' that came with the small platic tank including the top cap seal that was falling to bits. I made up another set of pipework using some old pipe that came off the 500 carbs.

This morning it fired up again but number 1 cylinder was luke warm so it looks as if there is now crap from the piping that has blocked up something in number 1 carb. Dam & blast it - whilst looking at the petrol pipe to the carbs that came from Planet Silicicone it feels very soft and I had to put a clip on the T piece supply to stop it weeping. The carb end is okay as I  fitted spring clips when assembling the carbs.

I'm thinking the carbs will now need to come off to ensure there are no more black bits swilling around in the carb bowls, jets etc, it seems unlikely that just number one bowl has crap in it.

I'm not happy with the feel of the carb feed pipework either now it was (5.4mm i.d.) item 130740225601 on ebay. The DS stuff is over £20 a meter and is 5.5 mm i.d.

When I phoned DS the bloke on the phone did not know the o.d. that they sell.
DS part number is 95001-550-0160M. My old carb pipework was reinforced in the wall of the tubing.

Anyone here used the DS pipework/is it re-inforced?

I've found this am wondering if it's okay as its 5.5 mm i.d like the DS one at 5.5 mm i.d.?

Unfortunately I used those today on my temporary tank arrangement.

Can you recommend a supplier, was the original Honda pipework 5.4 mm orr 5.5 mm i.d Bryan?

I'm thinking if I drain all the carb bowls first to see what the petrol looks like just maybe I could get away with removing number one carb bowl and clean out the jet(s) you can unscrew?

Trying to avoid all the work that removing the carbs entails is it worth a shot or am I fooling myself to avoid the inevitable?

Take em off Ted, it’s the heart of the motor and you know as well as I, it only takes a gnats chuff of nothing to block anything. I guarantee if you do number 1, you’ll get an issue with one of the others later, it’s not worth the agro. Do it now while it’s in a state of build where it’s the lesser of two evils.

It’ll be in the back of your mind if you don’t and you’ve spent so much time, energy and pension for it to stuff up at one of the last hurdles. I know it’s a sod but you know it’s what’s really needed.

Sorry to be the arbinger of doom but if you do it now, you know it’s done right……..

Hey, Ted.

Just returned to Blighty for a short break and catching up on the ‘news’. Congratulations on your work with the 500, you must be both proud and satisfied.👍👍

Hi Phil back on dry land eh!

Update:- So this morning I disconnected the clutch cable and removed  number one carb bowl. The was no muck in the bowl or the petrol I drained out first.
Unscrewed the jet I could see that it was partially blocked with a black mass. Main jet was okay. When I put it back together I'm minded to fire it up and see how it runs. As an extra precaution I will drain the other three bowls and check the petrol for any sign of muck. If any dirt in the others carbs will deffo come off.

  Update:-
I have thrown my cover sheet over the 500 so I can leave it to come to it's senses.
I need to have a week or ten days complete break if I can.
I will walk past her in the garage and look the other away - that might help.
Fishing plus going out on the 400 should be theraputic.
