CB750 F1 Project May 15
« on: May 11, 2015, 09:29:34 AM »
We have 2 CB 750 F1's as projects to work on.

I am working old school methods so sure more modern methods are available but prefer to do it my own way
My son has a 1977 which is in parts a previous abandoned project bought as spares not been touched for 25 years. The engine was in the frame as a rolling bike ,with a few boxes of parts and accesories.

We started the rebuild and found we need several key parts ignition - battery - etc sourced these and cleaned rebuild carbs rewired bike as an initial try .
We had the engine running fine ,but stacks more to do.

With 1 bike in progress I saw an unmolested F1 on ebay which also had been of road for 25 years. Bought the bike and brought it home plenty to do but an ideal model for the first project.
Within 2 hours of getting bike we had the engine fired up and running smooth.

The second project was now also running as the lead project with the bike being nearly complete

Removed all the broken trims started to address the front brakes.
Bought new master seal kit braided hoses and new pads
Freed piston  Rebuild in Progress

Sourced an original exhaust in fair condition - Fitted and looking good - Old one fitted to project 1
The wheels look like what i had originally on my old bike sure they were called Lesters?
either way they needed further attention.

The front wheel has been hand stripped fine polished and repainted in black with polished rims Pics to follow.

The Headgear /Headlamp and all painted fittings were degreased, cleaned polished and referred back to original standard.
New indicators fitted and working fine
Front mudguard cleaned de rusted - treated - polished - few dings  but will do for now Refitted and looks fair

Tank de rusted dried out and awaiting tank sealant to be applied better safe than sorry.

I will try to add pic as we progress with both projects.

here are pics from ebay advert

Presently need new l/h switch unit as the horn pass button is missing and has a oversize screw fitted unless anyone has an old one I could use for parts

Front end now all sorted and looking good.

Started today on the tank, what looked like a few dings soon showed up all the minor dings as i started prep work.
I decided to strip the tank back to metal and get a clean start.

First i cleaned the inside to remove any rust, with paraffin and grit .Then when dried out and flushed with some fuel treated with a tank sealant.
Cleaned off the underside, treated and zinc primed before 2 coats of red lead were applied.

Then I started on removing paintwork and stripes using course paper to break through surface and scraping with a stanley blade to near the metal surface.
Tank half stripped and looking good. When its stripped i will add some pics as I start repaint job.

Sourced the right colour and it was surprising to me to get the Candy effect you apply silver base and top coat and flat back That will be interesting to try.

Yes and it was local so the offer could not be missed.
Came in handy as we wanted another complete system for the sons project so he went half with purchase
2 bikes sorted at the cost of 1 original and like you say scarce to find

its in decent nick a couple of dings and a small rust hole near junction bracket under the brake pedal, should be an easy fix and won't be that noticeable

Cheers

Sourced a left hand switch unit its coming from Italy - Project 1 sorted with this problem if its as good as it looks, Could not seem to find one available in decent nick in UK

Again this will solve both bikes
Sons project 2  also has issues with left hand switch and some buttons missing so we should be able to build 1 out of the 2 faulty ones

I love this retirement lark plenty of time to mess tinker and do what you enjoy.
(Just hope I will be able to ride them when the time comes)

Tank refinish progressing well
Tank stopped back to metal & filled all the dints and dings

levelled off and fine filled then treated with redoxide spray

flatted off and sprayed with spray putty to remove any imperfections marks etc

Flatted off and red oxide again & flatted off and primed in grey awaiting spray to attempt the Candy Antares Red finish "That will be fun,but sure I will get there"

No comments on this one the spacer was just the right height for what was required even if it looks a bit !!!!

Paint on order, so in a couple of weeks hopefully I should have a nice red tank again.

Seat Base looks rusty and grotty so another strip back to see whats below.
Started today and found the base is very good, just caught it in time before it started to go too far
Cleaned of the brushed paint and rust back to metal I will treat with kill rust and spray back up.
End result should look good before I recover the seat.

Underside before treating

Underside next to foam treated with kill rust and painted with hammerite

Keith Jnr has suggested that we put gel inserts into the foam while we are recovering- Any comments?
Personally I never had an issue with the seats before.

Cheers

Great progress Keith.
I personally wouldn't bother with gel inserts I can ride my K1 all day its like sitting in an armchair compared to most modern bikes.

Rear Seat cowl
The three bolts other side that fasten the trim are rusted solid - Failed to get them out without cutting them off, so I will work around them for now.
The trim fixings that go through the seat crumbled as they were removed - looks like I will have to either source some or make some new ones

Progress
Metal Seat under foam complete
Rear cowl flatted back and primed
The side of the seat you see when its opened up will be my next target today to apply finish coats and lacquer- then when new cover arrives hopefully  a completed task
