What is the most likely cause of a 550 not engaging 3rd gear fully. It chatters and wants to disengage all others are ok.

Started my latest project and oil light wouldn't go out, so got a new one (thanks Julie). Still don't go out. There is no continuity between terminal and earth so Im ruling out a short and Ive used a test light with pos to battery and neg to terminal, that doesn't go out either. What to try next? Drop oil and check gauze pick up ? Could the filter be an issue ? Please dont make me take the engine out

Loads of chatter across various forums on the internet about this, but can it be done. Has anyone on here done it ? I have everything I need except the pinion gear.
Biggest issue seems to be the shape of the case not making a seal, but I reckon I can sort that.
Before I buy a gear does anyone know if the gear and clutch will mesh correctly in 500 cases.

I dont have a sprocket cover for my latest project, and dont want one but will the oil seal stay in place without it.
Im going to order one if it will or rethink if it wont.

After a couple of false starts on bikes that were to good to "customise" Ive finally got one to play with. I really like the look of Graham and Julies "mongrels". So mine will be along the same lines, using whatever I have available or can reasonably obtain. I'm a fair way into the build and as is usual the first casualty is the budget. It was actualy Graham that pointed out the bike to me and a trip to Liverpool later I was the proud owner of what friends and family call "another pile o shite". The seller assured me it was all there and just needed putting together, yeah right. To be fair he was selling because he was going blind so cant be too critical. Im fitting a switch like this, only its an old genuine Honda one. Where does it get the earth from for the starter ?
There is a blob of solder on top of the switch inside which activates the solenoid when earthed but it doesn't touch the handlebars, should it or am I on the wrong track altogether? [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I was going to buy some used coils from DK but saw new non oem ones on ebay for the same price or less.
Do you think they will do, or stick with used oem?

I was going to buy some lower steering clamp pinch bolts but realised I dont know exactly what I need. M10 of course but what pitch
So far everything Ive tried seems very tight and dont want to force it.

Just sorting out bits and pieces for my next project and "dry fitted" the rear hub using the parts that came with the bike (500ko).

Can anyone confirm (or not) that this is the correct spacer for the clutch pinion gear please.
ID 22mm
OD 30mm
Width 13.5mm

Does anyone have a front brake calliper for a cb 500. cosmetically challenged is ok as ill be painting it.
Just thought id ask before taking a chance on an ebay listing.

How do the spokes come from the factory. I know they are steel but what rust protection do they get? I have a set that are good but a bit discoloured, will cleaning them with emery cloth or a wire brush ruin them.

Sold to me as a 500 four rear, but looks too "chunky". The hub measures up the same and spoke length looks right but the spokes are much thicker than the ones I just got from DS.
The spoke pimples (?) on the rim are much more pronounced than Ive seen before. tyre size is 120/18 and rim is marked 18-2.15. Somewhere along my travels I seem to have acquired a set of 750 carbs. They appear to be in great condition compared with some of the offerings on ebay so Im going to list them at £160 inc pp.
